Seven-seat cars can be really handy – even if you don’t use all the seats at all times, they often have some of the biggest boots on the market. Many new seven seaters are more expensive than an equivalent five-seat version so buying used can help rein in those extra costs.

- VW Touran
- Audi Q7
- Volvo XC90
- Land Rover Discovery
- Citroen Grand C4 Picasso
- Kia Sorento
- Ford S-Max
- SEAT Alhambra
- Ford Galaxy
- VW Sharan
1. VW Touran
The VW Touran has a practical seven-seat cabin, feels relaxing and easy to drive, is simple to operate and looks good in an understated way. The middle row features three individual seats that slide and recline individually, so you can create more room for luggage or passengers. On the road, the light controls, plentiful grip and impressive resistance to body lean make it easy to drive.
2. Audi Q7
The Audi Q7 is another premium seven-seat SUV worth putting on your used car shortlist. The cabin is fractionally smaller than the Volvo’s but is still large enough to carry seven adults for short journeys. It has an interior built from upmarket-feeling materials, impeccable build quality and high-tech options including the Virtual Cockpit system that replaces the traditional dials with a high-res screen.
3. Volvo XC90
If you’re after a used premium SUV, chances are you’ll like the Volvo XC90. It offers plenty of plus points – not least its spacious seven-seat cabin. Soft suspension and comfy seats make it utterly effortless to waft away hours of motorway driving while powerful engines, including a plug-in hybrid with high performance and low emissions, propel it forward with minimal fuss.
4. Land Rover Discovery
If your idea of a family holiday is trekking up a mountain, then the Land Rover Discovery should be at the peak of your seven-seat shortlist. A new version came out in 2017, but the previous model still has acres of interior space, a massive boot and huge towing capacity. The cabin lacks the polish of Audi and Mercedes models but there’s still leather and wood trim and it’ll comfortably beat them when driving off road.
5. Citroen Grand C4 Picasso
The Touran is more than worthy of the top spot but stops short of being truly interesting – something the Citroen Grand C4 Picasso is in spades. It also offers a versatile and flexible cabin, along with impressive comfort both from the seats and the suspension. Its driving experience isn’t quite as polished as the VW’s but its more stylish design might sway it for you.
6. Kia Sorento
The rugged seven-seat Kia Sorento SUV makes a great used buy. It’s comfortable and easy to drive while the spacious cabin seats five with no complaints, or seven at a push. What’s more, four-wheel drive and high ground clearance mean it can go further off road than many similar cars. It also has Kia’s industry-leading transferrable seven-year warranty for peace of mind.
7. Ford S-Max
The Ford S-Max is slightly smaller than the Galaxy, above, and focusses more on driving fun. As such, the roof is more curved now so those in the sixth and seventh seats have slightly less headroom to work with and the boot is a little smaller. You still get a great driving experience, however, with accurate steering and reasonably powerful turbocharged engines.
8. SEAT Alhambra
If you need the most space possible, few cars can match the gargantuan SEAT Alhambra. It has seating for seven adults, a vast boot and rear doors that slide open for easy rear-seat access. It also gets a range of efficient and powerful turbo engines, an optional twin-clutch automatic gearbox and a touchscreen infotainment system. This is an ideal choice if you regularly need all seven seats for passengers.
9. Ford Galaxy
Like the Alhambra, the Ford Galaxy is a traditional MPV with a huge body and masses of space inside. The rear two seats are more than large enough to carry adults over longer journeys, while comfortable suspension means passengers won’t be too car sick when you get where you’re going. It’s easy to drive and the big windows help the cabin feel airy and not claustrophobic.
10. VW Sharan
The VW Sharan is essentially the same car as the SEAT Alhambra above. It trades the Alhambra’s lower purchase price for marginally nicer feeling materials in the cabin and a posher badge on the nose. It has all the same benefits including a vast cabin with room for seven adults and their luggage, along with a reassuringly stable and untaxing driving experience.
