Today we’re pitching the old-school against the modern age, as we find out if the old Mercedes C63 AMG Black Series can still cut it against the latest performance saloons.
The AMG C63 Black Series was pretty bonkers when it came out, and it still is today. It has a naturally aspirated 6.2 litre V8, which puts out 527 hp and 620 nm of torque.
This power is fed through a seven-speed automatic gearbox to the rear wheels only. It’s the lightest car here, coming in at 1710kg, which may give it an edge.
The first challenger is the BMW M3 Competition. It’s rear-wheel drive (like the Mercedes) but comes with a 3.0-litre, twin-turbo straight-six engine producing 510 hp and 650 nm of torque. It’s a touch heavier than the Merc, tipping the scales at 1730kg, but its eight-speed automatic gearbox is one of the best in the business.
Last but not least, we have the Audi RS5 sportback. It has a 2.9 litre V6 with twin turbos putting out 450hp and 600nm of torque. The Audi does have an ace up its sleeve – its Quattro all-wheel-drive system. While this may get it off the line quicker, it is the heaviest car here at 1745kg.
So who will win in this battle of old Vs new? You’ll have to watch to find out.
