Newer is always better, right? Well, that’s exactly the question Mat’s here to answer, and he’ll do it using the help of a brand-new Audi S3 Sportback and a three-year-old model.

Let’s start with the old car, shall we? It’s a 2017 Audi S3 Sportback, so it’s packing a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine with 310hp and 400Nm of torque. This power is metered out by a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox and finds its way to the asphalt via all four wheels thanks to Audi’s famed quattro all-wheel-drive system.
The brand-new S3 gets the same quattro system. And the same seven-speed automatic gearbox. And its 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine also produces 310hp and 400Nm of torque… There’s plenty to be said for ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’, but surely Audi could have squeezed a few extra horsepower from the new S3? After all, the all-new VW Golf R manages to conjure 320hp from its almost identical 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine…
Thankfully, Audi has tweaked the new S3’s looks, but to tell them apart on paper you’ll have to turn your attention to weight. The old car tips the scales at 1,445kg, while the new model chalks up 1,575kg.
So, will the older, lighter car have the edge in our drag race or will the brand-new model have a few tricks up its sleeve? Watch the race to find out.
