Drag race: Tesla-powered Ferrari 308 vs Ferrari Testarossa

June 08, 2021 by

If you were to roll back to the ‘80s for a carwow drag race on VHS, you might see something like this: a Ferrari 308 GTS taking on a Testarossa…

The result should be a foregone conclusion, right? After all, the 308 used a 2.9-litre V8 and the Testarossa a 4.9-litre flat-12.

Fast forward to 2021 and this race isn’t quite so straightforward, because one of these Ferraris has been given a 21st-century makeover.

So the Ferrari Testarossa still uses the glorious flat-12 engine, which is good for 390hp and 480Nm of torque. That’s put to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox.

This particular 308 isn’t like the rest, though. It’s a bit like a cyberpunk reimagination — with its V8 yanked out in favour of a Tesla-sourced electric setup. As a result, it has 450hp and 680Nm to send to its rear wheels.

Despite the batteries, this 308 ‘GTE’ weighs a bit less than the Testarossa coming in at 1,490kg and 1,506kg respectively.

So, does new battery power propel the 308 ahead of its old-school big brother? Watch to find out…
