Alpine is launching its first ever four-door coupe next year called the A390, and this concept car gives you a first look at the outlandish design.

Exact power figures are yet to be announced, but this BMW i5 alternative has three electric motors which have a clever party trick to make it as much fun to drive as possible.

New Alpine A390_β concept design

The new A390_β concept takes Alpine in a very different direction to anything we’ve seen before. The A110 was a modern reboot of the 60s sports car, and the A290 is reminiscent of the classic Renault 5 Alpine Turbo. This however is a pretty outlandish design.

New Alpine A390 front

Starting up front you have a sleek and angular nose with some trick-looking headlights – which may remind you of a Hyundai Tuscon’s thanks to the triangular design. The Alpine script is also lit up to help it stand out, and that deep bonnet scoop will also be carried forward into production.

New Alpine A390 side doors open

Alpine actually says that this concept represents 85% of the final design you’ll see in showrooms, however one feature which won’t make production is the rear-hinged back doors. The final car will have a traditional B-pillar. Those snowflake style wheels will look the same though.

The diffuser and lower winglets extend at speed to improve stability

Moving to the rear you have this car’s most odd design quirk, because the back of the car can actually get longer at speed to improve the aerodynamics. It’s very unlikely this feature will be on the production car, but if it is then maybe it could be activated using a little blue button…

New Alpine A390 rear

Strange protrusions aside, the rear lights have a similar pixelated design to the front lamps. The huge curved rear window is also a feature lifted from the A110, and the vast glass area is meant to let lots of light into the cabin.

New Alpine A390_β concept motors and driving

Alpine is keeping its cards close to its chest in terms of specific stats for the A390, however it has confirmed that it’ll be loosely based on the same collection of parts used on the Renault Megane E-Tech and Nissan Ariya.

New Alpine A390 front quarter static

We say loosely because this sporty little number from Alpine has something that neither of those models has – three electric motors. That means the A390 is a lot more than just a dressed-up Nissan Ariya Nismo.

New Alpine A390 side

It has two motors on the rear axle and one at the front, and this has allowed for a clever torque vectoring system. This essentially means the car can actively split the torque between the front and rear wheels and from left to right, making it feel a lot more agile through the corners.

New Alpine A390 top

This technology was previously reserved for high-end supercars, so this is one of the first series production models to feature it. Alpine claims it’ll make this large electric car feel as agile as an A110, but we’ll have to wait to get behind the wheel to see if this is true.

New Alpine A390 rear

You’ll have to wait until 2025 to find out exactly how much power the A390 has, however given the cars it’ll be going up against you can expect it to hover around the 400hp mark.

New Alpine A390_β concept interior

The A390_β concept’s cabin certainly has the wow factor thanks to the crazy design and outlandish materials, however you can expect it to be toned-down considerably when it goes into production.

New Alpine A390 interior

Just take those enormous bucket seats for example. These not only look completely bonkers, but they also have something called an ‘F1 Mode’. This dramatically reclines the chairs and raises the pedals to mimic the driving position you get in a Formula 1 car, and the steering wheel even shrinks slightly for a more sporty feel.

New Alpine A390 interior seat modes

This feature won’t be available on the final car, but it will have the F1-style Overtake button on the steering wheel, just like the A290 hot hatch. This provides you with an extra boost of power for blasting past slow-moving traffic.

New Alpine A390_β concept: when can I buy one?

This is just a concept car for now, however the production version of the A390 will be revealed in 2025 with sales starting towards the end of the year.

It’s difficult to put a price on this car for now, because it’s kind of carved its own niche and as such has no real direct competitors. The BMW i5 would be the closest alternative. Alpine has told Carwow that it’ll sit somewhere between a BMW iX2 and a Porsche macan EV, meaning a price tag of around £60,000 seems feasible.
