About Skywell

Skywell is a Chinese car manufacturer, an offshoot of the Chinese commercial vehicle company Nanjing Golden Dragon Bus. Known as Skyworth in its home market, Skywell was founded in China in 2017 and started importing cars to the UK in 2024.

Skywell’s imports to the UK are handled by Innovation Automotive, the same group that also imports DFSK commercial vehicles.

The only car Skywell currently sells in the UK is the BE11, known as the ET5 in other markets. It’s a large, fully-electric SUV that majors on space and value, though we weren’t too impressed with its interior quality, efficiency or driving dynamics when we reviewed it.

If the BE11 is successful Skywell will likely bring other models to the UK market. Possible examples include the Skyworth HT-i (a plug-in hybrid version of the BE11), the Skyworth Q (a small electric hatchback) or the Skyworth Skyhome (an electric saloon car with a huge 57-inch interior screen).

What our car expert says

“Generally Chinese cars are getting better and more desirable by the month, but Skywell’s sole offering so far doesn’t really follow that trend. Hopefully any future models are a bit better than the BE11 - right now, with a rubbish car and only a handful of dealers across the country, you’d have to really want a Skywell (or get a really good deal on one) to take the plunge. I’d rather wait for one of the more exciting-looking models to arrive.”

Skywell FAQs

Skywell cars are made by Skyworth, a Chinese company founded in 2017 as an expansion of the Nanjing Golden Dragon Bus company. They’re built by Tianmei Automobile, a Chinese manufacturing company.
The BE11 costs from £36,995 for the short range model or £39,995 for the long range car. All paint colours are free of charge and there are no optional extras.
Older GWM pickup trucks did have engines based on Toyota designs, but more recent models have used GWM’s own engines.
No, the BE11 hasn’t been tested by Euro NCAP. Because it was type approved before the latest round of EU safety regulations, it’s missing a large degree of active safety equipment, so if tested today it would score very poorly.
