About Dacia

Dacia was the official state car maker of Romania when that country was under Communist rule from 1945 to 1989, but once the Cold War ended, Dacia was bought out by Renault to act as its bargain-car brand. The two companies had been linked before that, as Dacia had been building a version of the old Renault 12 under licence.

Since the Renault buyout, Dacia has become a byword for bargain motoring. Low production costs at its Romanian factory, and the use of older Renault parts which have already repaid their initial investment means that Dacia has been able to offer super-low prices down the years.

Its lineup now consists of the Sandero hatchback (the best selling car in Europe in 2024), which also comes in a faux-4x4 version called the Stepway; the hugely popular Duster small SUV; the seven-seat Jogger, which is sort of a cross between an estate and and SUV; and the new Bigster SUV, which as you might have guessed is a bigger car than the Duster.

All are fairly basic inside, but there is some sophistication starting to creep in — such as the Bigster’s new hybrid engine, or the 10.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that’s standard on most Dacias aside from the cheapest models.
