About Volvo

Volvo was founded in Sweden in 1927, with a single driving principle - safety. And that’s a focus it’s maintained over the decades, being responsible for many safety ‘firsts’ including most notably the three-point seatbelt back in 1959.

Volvo cars provide a strong alternative to established German opposition from Audi and Mercedes-Benz. Volvo has also pledged to be an electric-only brand by 2030, with excellent models such as the former Carwow Car of the Year-winning EX30 leading the charge.

Who owns Volvo?

Volvo is now owned by the Chinese company, Geely. The deal went through back in 2010, transferring ownership of the Volvo brand from Ford.

Where are Volvo cars made?

Volvo manufactures in its home country of Sweden, as well as Belgium, China and the United States. Our favourite Volvo, the EX30, is made in China but will be built in Belgium as well from 2025.

Are Volvo cars reliable?

Yes, Volvos are generally reliable. Volvo has performed well in recent reliability surveys, and if faults do occur, they are usually straightforward to put right. The standard warranty of three years and 60,000 miles is the minimum you’d expect – some manufacturers offer longer cover.

Is Volvo a high maintenance car?

No, not especially. Service intervals can be as far apart as 18,000 miles, so you won’t need frequent visits to your local dealer.

What is the most common problem with Volvo cars?

Some owners find that Volvo automatic gearboxes can be reluctant to change gear, with odd noises coming from the transmission. We’ve also heard of power steering issues. But really, serious problems are relatively rare. If you often have trouble with your Volvo then you’ve been unlucky.
