Renault has created a new spin-off brand called Ampere to focus purely on the development of electric cars, and it’s rumoured that it’ll be launching a new city car this week. Read on for all you need to know.
Renault’s new EV arm is said to be launching an all-new city car this week which will be even smaller than the Renault 5. The French firm created the Ampere sub brand to focus purely on EVs such as this, and it’ll be launching in 2026.
What is Ampere?
Ampere is a new sub brand from Renault which is focussed solely on the development of affordable EVs in an attempt to reclaim some of the market share from the new Chinese brands coming to Europe.
You won’t see cars wearing the Ampere logo though, the company will be developing vehicles and technology for Renault. Ampere employs over 11,000 people, 35% of whom are engineers, to develop new electric cars. The firm is already hard at work making the new Renault 5, Renault 4 and another new, smaller electric city car.
Ampere to launch new electric city car
Renault’s EV sub brand is due to launch a new, affordable electric city car this week according to Reuters. Ampere is having an investor’s day on Wednesday 15 November, and the announcement is expected to be made there.
Nothing is known so far about what’s powering this car, however it’s said to be smaller than the retro-inspired Renault 5. This new model will be badged as a Renault, and it’s due to go on sale in 2026. This will be one of the six new EVs promised by Renault before 2030. We’ve already had the Renault Megane E-Tech, then the Renault 5 is coming next year. Following on from that in 2025 we’ll have the new Renault 4, a car which was previewed by the Renault 4EVER Trophy concept last year.
