After nine years of waiting, the production version of the Tesla Roadster is finally being revealed on 1 October 2026. Here’s everything you need to know about it.
This is your first look at the new Tesla Roadster, nine years after the concept was first revealed. It’s been a long time coming, but those customers who pre-ordered the car all those years ago are one step closer to actually getting it.
Elon Musk has made a lot of promises about this car, including the use of rocket tech from SpaceX, but only time will tell if any of this comes to fruition.
New Tesla Roadster: the story so far
It was back in 2017 when Tesla first revealed the Roadster concept, and it was meant to then go on sale in 2020. Since then it’s been pushed back multiple times, and Elon Musk took to X in 2024 hinting that the car would be shipped in 2025.
Almost two years have passed since then, but now there’s a very official-looking countdown on Tesla’s website for the Roadster, and it’s ticking down to 1 October.
New Tesla Roadster design
This darkened teaser image is your first look at the new Roadster, and already it looks pretty different to the concept version from nine years ago.
It has a full-width light bar across the rear instead of the separate tail lamps on the concept, and there seems to be a massive wing as well. It’s tricky to make head-nor-tails of this image, but there’s a good chance that it’s actually upside-down.
When you flip it around it looks much more like a car, with the wing wrapping around the rear end and those jet streams taking on the appearance of exhausts. But this is an electric car, right?
New Tesla Roadster motors and performance
Those four jets aren’t exhausts, they’re rockets. That’s according to Elon Musk anyway.
When the Roadster concept was first revealed, it was meant to do 0-60mph in under 2.0 seconds. Since then, Tesla has made the Model S Plaid – a saloon car with the same level of performance.
So the Roadster needed to up its game in order to wow people, so Musk posted on X in 2024 saying there would be an optional Rocket Thruster Package to bring the 0-60mph time down to under 1.0 second. That would make it the fastest-accelerating roadgoing car in the world by quite some margin.
But remember, Musk did also say that the Tesla Cybertruck would be “waterproof enough to serve briefly as a boat”, and that functionality never came to reality.
