The Audi SQ7 and SQ8 have been updated for 2021 with a new petrol engine borrowed from the Audi RSQ8 and Porsche Cayenne

  • On sale in late 2020
  • SQ7 costs from £78,000

The Audi SQ7 and Audi SQ8 will now be offered with a powerful 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine instead of the existing diesel engine. These updated cars will be available to order in autumn 2020.

The new petrol-powered Audi SQ7 has more power, but less torque, than today’s diesel car.

Audi says the new engine is in response to the growing popularity of petrol-powered performance SUV’s. The 4.0-litre V8 engine is the same unit that can be found in the Audi RSQ8, Porsche Cayenne and Lamborghini Urus but with slightly less power. The engine in the updated Audi SQ7 and SQ8 will produce 506hp and 770Nm of torque – that’s around 70hp more than the current diesel-powered models but torque is down by 130Nm.

Both the SQ7 and SQ8 will do 0-60 in less than 4.1 seconds.

As a result, both SUV can sprint from 0–62mph in 4.1 seconds, which is approximately 0.7 seconds faster than the outgoing diesel versions. As before, the Audi SQ7 and SQ8 are electronically limited to a 155mph top speed. Audi claims both the SQ7 and SQ8 will return 23.3–23.5mpg (WLTP figures) thanks to tech that can deactivate a number of the engine’s cylinders when you don’t need its full power.

Visual tweaks mean you won’t mistake the SQ7 for the standard Q7.

New Audi SQ7 & SQ8 design

To make sure the updated SQ7 and SQ8 stand out from the normal Q7 and Q8, Audi has added the usual performance styling upgrades to the exterior. A huge grille, honeycomb style vents on the air intakes and matt silver accents help set them apart. At the rear, both cars have an accentuated diffuser and quad exhaust pipes to reaffirm that these aren’t your standard Q models. An optional black pack is also available that adds gloss black mirror caps, grille surrounds and window frames.

Updated S models get the same high-tech cabin as the standard Q7 and Q8.

New Audi SQ7 & SQ8 interior and equipment

Inside, you get a set of S-branded sport seats upholstered in leather and Alcantara with contrasting stitching. The interior inlays are made of piano-black plastic and matt brushed aluminium and you can pay extra to have these swapped for carbon fibre or grey, high-gloss oak veneer.

Other updates on the newly revised SQ7 and SQ8 models include uprated adaptive air-suspension system and active all-wheel steering. The former lets you choose between soft, more comfortable settings and firmer, sportier ones while active all-wheel steering makes the cars more manoeuvrable in town and more stable at motorway speeds.

The new SQ7 and SQ8 will go on sale before 2021.
