The Audi S5 Cabriolet is a fast four-seater convertible that rivals the most powerful versions of the Mercedes C-Class Cabriolet and BMW 4 Series Convertible as well as the unsophisticated but lovable Ford Mustang V8 Convertible.

Differences between the S5 and other A5 Cabriolet models are subtle – only the most dedicated Audi fans will be able to spot the more aggressive bumpers, four beefy exhaust pipes and unique 18-inch alloy wheels at a glance.

There are more racey additions inside, such as a flat-bottomed steering wheel, carbon fibre trims and seats upholstered in a combination of Alcantara suede and leather. Despite all these trinkets it doesn’t look or feel very sporty – a deliberate move to allow the upcoming RS5 cabriolet to feel, well, more expensive and more sporty.

Under the S5 Cabriolet’s sloping bonnet lies a 3.0-litre petrol V6 that abandons the supercharger of the old model and gets a turbocharger that takes away some of the old model’s sporty engine noise. There are benefits, however, mainly in terms of fuel economy which is now 3mpg better at 38mpg and performance is improved too – the 0-62mph time drops by 0.6 seconds to 4.8 seconds.

Although the S5 Cabriolet won’t entertain you in some quick corners like a rear-wheel-drive BMW will, it compensates with a standard four-wheel-drive system which is a real boon on Britain’s frequently slippery roads, and the S5 has a neutral handling balance that encourages you to push the limits.

Standard equipment is pretty generous for an Audi – an infotainment system with sat-nav, internet connectivity and an 8.3-inch screen is standard along with cruise control with a speed limiter, climate control and electrically adjustable leather-upholstered seats with a massage function. A lot of the new tech is still optional, though, such as the £900 dynamic steering or the bright £650 Matrix LED headlights.
