It’s been more than 20 years since the old Audi A2 disappeared from showrooms, but now it’s back. The new A2 e-tron is an electric alternative to the brand’s own A3 hatchback, and it also shares parts with the Volkswagen ID3 Neo.
These camouflaged prototypes give you a pretty good idea of what the finished car will look like when it’s revealed in autumn this year, and that design doesn’t just look retro. It has real benefits in an electric car.

New Audi A2 design
Even with the light camouflage, you can tell that the new Audi A2 looks a lot like the old A2 hatchback from the early 2000s. Just look at the stubby nose and egg-like silhouette.
There are also plenty of styling cues from other new Audi models. The thin LED front lights with the main beams hidden below are the same layout as the Q3 and Q4 e-tron, and the thin taillights remind me of the Audi Nuvolari supercar.
The design is all about streamlining to make the A2 e-tron cut through the air as easily as possible. The car’s smooth shape works with air curtains at the front to suppress turbulence, and there’s also something called a “gap reducer” which minimises the amount of space between the wheel and the wheelarch.
All these elements work together to make the A2 e-tron as efficient as possible, which will help the range.
New Audi A2 e-tron batteries and range
The new Audi A2 uses a 61kWh battery, the same as you’ll find in the Volkswagen ID3 Neo. That car has up to 299 miles of range with this battery fitted, but the Audi might be able to go even further.
Those aerodynamic tweaks could boost the range to around 315 miles, over 30 miles more than a Renault Megane can manage with the same-sized battery. We’ll find out the actual claimed range closer to the full reveal.
What Audi has confirmed is DC charging speeds of up to 105kW, allowing you to top up from 10-80% in 26 minutes. That’s four minutes quicker than a Nissan Leaf. It’ll also have vehicle-to-load charging, meaning you can power household appliances from your car using an adapter.
New Audi A2 e-tron prices
The new Audi A2 e-tron will be revealed in full in the autumn, and sales will start shortly after. UK deliveries are likely to be in early 2027.
As for the price, it’s a bit too soon to say right now. A Volkswagen ID3 Neo starts from just over £33,000, while a Nissan Leaf costs £32,600. You can expect the Audi A2 e-tron to cost around £35,000 when order books open, given its position as a more premium alternative to those cars.
