Mercedes has launched the C43 4Matic Coupe – a new 367hp sweet spot between the bonkers AMG C63 and more sedate models

If you fancy a fast Mercedes C-Class Coupe but can’t stomach the price or fuel consumption of the AMG C63, the new C43 4Matic might be perfect for you. This hugely fast compact coupe offers 367hp putting it squarely between the 476hp C63 and the 245hp C300.

It’s powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 that catapults the C43 from 0-62mph in 4.7 seconds – 0.7 seconds slower than the C63 but 1.3 seconds faster than the C300. Top speed is limited to 155mph. The sheer acceleration is aided by the standard 4Matic four-wheel drive helping improve traction and grip compared to two-wheel drive models.

Power is fed to the wheels via a nine-speed automatic gearbox with unique programming for the C43. The software allows rapid shift times in the car’s sportier modes and can go down multiple gears in one go for short bursts of acceleration. In addition, comfort-orientated modes have been optimised for smoother power delivery.

It gets adaptive suspension as standard to provide a softer or firmer ride depending on the driving conditions. The front axle gets modified geometry inspired by the C63 and new joints to improve rigidity over the standard model. Finally, the four-wheel-drive system has been tuned to deliver more power to the rear wheels helping the car feel more like a rear-wheel drive sports car.

To mark it out as a special model, the C43 4Matic Coupe gets unique alloy wheels, an AMG bodykit, ‘diamond’ grille, black wing mirrors and window trim, and two chrome exhausts. Inside, a flat-bottom steering wheel with red stitching, extensive use of artificial leather upholstery, aluminium trim pieces and even a lap timer feature to enhance the sporty ambiance.

Mercedes C43 4Matic Coupe price and release date

Prices are expected to be around £45,000 – significantly undercutting the £61,160 needed for the full-fat AMG C63. Mercedes hasn’t confirmed an on-sale date yet but we expect it to hit the road some time in summer 2016.
