2019 BMW M340i xDrive price and release date

The 2019 BMW M340i xDrive will be launched at the LA motor show in November 2019, with the car going on sale in spring 2019. It’s likely to carry a price tag of £47,000 putting it into to direct contention with four-wheel-drive performance saloons such as the Mercedes-AMG C43 4Matic (£52,000) and the Audi S4 (£46,000).

2019 BMW M340i xDrive styling

The 2019 BMW 340i xDrive is designed to satisfy your need for a sporty BMW 3 Series while we wait for the latest version of the firm’s super saloon – the M3.

As a result, the M340i is the most menacing 3 Series we have seen yet with a mesh design for its kidney grilles, while its unique body kit comprises a ground-hugging front bumper complete with larger air vents, side sills and body-coloured rear spoiler. The back bumper features trapezoidal tailpipe trims while the car gets Cerium Grey metallic highlights on its grille, badge lettering, mirror caps, air vents and exhaust pipes.

The look is completed courtesy of the car’s M Sport suspension that sees it sit 10mm lower than the regular 3 Series and you get a choice of 18 or optional 19-inch wheels, the latter coming complete with high-performance tyres.

The interior gets largely the same treatment as the outside. Open the doors and you’ll spot M340i kick plates that protect the paint work from the soles of your shoes when you’re getting in. Inside, you get body-hugging sport seats with M-specific Sensatec/Alcantara upholstery, dark anthracite headliner, a sports steering wheel with gear-shift paddles and an M340i-unique digital instrument display.

2019 BMW M340i xDrive engine and specs

At the heart of the 2019 BMW 340i xDrive is a 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six engine that produces 374hp – 48hp more than the old model – and 500Nm of torque. That’s enough to get it from 0-62mph in just 4.4 seconds – half a second quicker than the old 340i and just half a second off the old BMW M3.

You have the xDrive’s four-wheel-drive system to thank for the impressive acceleration. Compared to the rear-wheel drive old model, it makes it easy to get the car’s generous power reserves onto the road even if the weather’s not playing ball.

Sticking the M340i xDrive in Sport or Sport+ mode sees more power sent to the back wheels. As a result, you can expect to feel the car push out of bends – just like a rear-wheel drive 3 Series – helped by the standard fitment of BMW’s electronically controlled rear M Sport differential.

Like the four-wheel drive, the eight-speed automatic gearbox gives you the best of both worlds. It’ll provide smooth shifts in town, but also quick manual changes using the paddles behind the steering wheel. For improved acceleration, it has lower gearing than you get in the standard 3 Series and also comes with launch control as standard – select it and the M340i will accelerate from a standstill perfectly, over and over again.

Even the M340i’s noise is adjustable thanks to a selectable exhaust, which makes the BMW louder at the prod of a button, while more powerful M Sport brakes make it stop harder and Variable Sports Steering makes it feel more responsive in bends.

Finally, adjustable dampers that allow you to switch between soft and stiff settings – for more comfort or preciser handling – are optional.
