New trim levels add extra equipment at a knockdown price

In the face of new competition form the likes of the soon-on-sale Renault Megane and excellent new Vauxhall Astra, VW has announced two new models for the venerable Golf range.

The first is called the Golf GT Edition and is a direct replacement for the old Golf GT trim level. The new model adds 18-inch alloy wheels, replacing the GT trim’s 17-inch versions, and a panoramic sunroof that fills the car’s interior with natural light. The additional equipment should cost £1,795, but is yours for a £300 increase compared to the old GT.

Despite looking sporty, GT Edition trim can be had with VW’s excellent 1.6-litre diesel engine that’s capable of returning fuel economy of nearly 75mpg and costs just £20 a year to tax.

Golf R-Line Edition

Further up the range, the new Golf R-Line Edition offers much the same, replacing the old R-Line model and adding the same extra equipment as the GT Edition for an additional cost of £300, so you get a sporty body kit but with 18-inch alloy wheels and a panoramic sunroof.

Volkswagen offers it with its excellent 2.0-litre diesel engine which mixes power and frugality in equal measure.
