Audi A1 Citycarver Review and Prices

The Audi A1 Citycarver is a bit of an oddball – part sensible hatchback, part high-riding SUV – but it’s packed with all the high-tech creature comforts you’d expect from Audi.

Is the Audi A1 Citycarver a good car?

If you’ve been searching for a posh city car with styling inspired (at least in part) by rugged high-riding SUVs, look no further than the Audi A1 Citycarver.

This diminutive hatchback comes with similar chunky wheel arch mouldings, contrasting bumper inserts and bold paint colours to the Ford Fiesta Active, but you get a posher-feeling interior that can be had in a range of eye-catching colour combinations.

For example, if you’re feeling brave you can get the centre console, air vent surrounds and door handle recesses decked-out in bright orange and swap out the standard seats for some heated items with orange contrasting stitching. Go for an S Line version, and they get some suede-like Alcantara upholstery, too.

The Audi A1 Citycarver also comes with a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system as standard alongside Audi’s excellent Virtual Cockpit screen that replaces conventional analogue dials with a reconfigurable display.

Elsewhere in the Audi A1 Citycarver’s cabin, you’ll find there’s just as much space as in the standard A1 Sportback. Two adults will fit fairly comfortably in the back and there’s a reasonable amount of space in the boot for everyone’s luggage.

You can think of the Audi A1 Citycarver as an A1 Allroad – just like the biggeA4 and A6 Allroad models, it comes with raised suspension, bigger wheels and chunky protective trim on its wheel arches and bumpers.

Unlike the standard A1 Sportback, the Audi A1 Citycarver comes with a choice of just two engines – a three-cylinder 30TFSI petrol unit and a more powerful four-cylinder 35TFSI petrol engine.

Both can be had with a seven-speed automatic gearbox instead of the standard six-speed manual unit, but you can’t get the Audi A1 Citycarver with four-wheel drive to match its rugged looks. That’s no bad thing, however – such systems might offer more grip on a slippery field, but they tend to make a car more expensive to run.

You’ll probably never drive off-road in your Audi A1 Citycarver, but its raised ride height (it’s 4cm taller than the standard A1 Sportback) means you’ll have even less to worry about driving down a pothole-covered street or navigating monstrous speed bumps.

You can pay extra to have the Audi A1 Citycarver fitted with adaptive suspension that lets you choose between soft, cushioned settings and firmer, sportier ones. This upgrade forms part of the optional Dynamic Package that also includes red brake callipers and a sound actuator that makes the engine sound sportier – albeit by pumping synthesised engine sounds through the car’s speakers.
