January 2024 marks the one millionth electric vehicle registered in the UK according to data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and traders (SMMT). Read on for all you need to know.
The one millionth electric vehicle was registered in the UK in January 2024, according to the latest new car registrations data from the SMMT (Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders).
While the total number of cars (all engines) registered in January 2024 grew by 8.2% to 142,876 units compared to the same month last year, registrations of battery electric vehicles (BEV) achieved a strong 21% increase (20,935 units) compared to January 2023. A total of over 100,000 EVs are expected to be registered in the UK in 2024.
The majority of the EVs registered in the UK in January 2024 came from the fleet and business sectors where BIK (benefit in kind) tax breaks for EVs make them a more tax-efficient choice for company car drivers.

Petrol engines are still the most popular in the UK, representing over 57% of new car sales in January, while sales of diesel-powered and hybrid electric (HEV) cars fell by 10.1% and 15.8%, respectively.
