There are many old cars described as having character and soul, often a euphemism for they break down frequently, but we wanted to have a look at which new cars have a unique quality about them. Many characterful cars have distinctive looks and aren’t afraid to be unusual in this world governed by appearance.
These cars have something that about them that sets them apart from other cars. Sometimes their look is a bit quirky, or perhaps they do things differently. Often they’re not actually very good cars!
The Cube is one of the first cars that springs to mind. Its distinctive looks cant be compared to anything else on sale, the interior is a bit wacky and every edge seems to be rounded. Unfortunately Nissan haven’t been selling many, so it wont be on sale here much longer. We think it’s a real shame that buyers are clearly scared of being a little different from the herd!
Land Rover Defender
Okay, so this one is actually a really old model, but you can still buy them new. The complete back to basics approach and no nonsense practicality of the Defender is what we like about it. Its pretty uncomfortable to travel in, but at the end of a long journey you wouldn’t hate it, you’d probably just love it even more.
Everything about the design of the Caterham 7 is for performance, not comfort. You can forget having a radio, air conditioning or even doors! The 7 is purely for fun and that’s why it’s built up such a loyal fan base. The fact that you can build it yourself means its even easier to see why so many people cherish them.
The iQ is an adorable looking car that is by no means perfect, but you could really imagine having fun buzzing around a city in one. Something about the tiny proportions and bunched up nose just make us really want one!
The Maserati definitely isn’t one of the best executive cars on sale, but it is the one wed most like to own. Beautifully styled, the Quattroporte has a Ferrari sourced engine and a lot of downsides! The interior isn’t very roomy, its not too comfortable and the build quality isn’t great. However it sounds glorious and is seriously rapid. When you think how little soul rivals like the 7-Series and S-Class have, it’s shocking that more people don’t buy them.
Aston Martin V12 Vantage
Some people may argue that all super-cars have character, undoubtedly most would put a smile on your face if you drove one, but a lot of experts say that many of the modern day super-cars feel too sterile. The V12 Vantage looks stunning, but doesn’t have the obvious wow factor that many rivals have. Instead it looks pretty similar to the V8 Vantage, but costs a hell of a lot more and goes a huge amount faster.
Many of the journalists who reviewed it said one of the things they love about it is its personality, which makes it so much more enjoyable to drive.
The Jimny is a hilariously bad car. The reviews are shocking and it has one of the lowest buzzScore of any car on sale, an appalling 3.3! But, we cant help imagine that if you were on holiday abroad with a bunch of friends, then it would make a really fun hire car. Squeezing into its tiny interior and attempting some off-roading would be far more fun in this than some sensible and boring SUV.
This Kia Soul is a car that was designed to be a bit different. It may have a stupid name, but a lot of the experts reckon it does actually have Soul! It looks cute and is available in some really wacky colours that add to the appeal. You can even buy it with a big dragon emblazoned on the side!
It wasn’t too easy coming up with new cars with character. Car manufacturers are frightened of creating cars that are a little out-there and break from convention. Wed like to see more adventurous styling and innovative thinking when it comes to design.
Its hard to add character into a mass produced object, but some manufacturers have succeeded. Part of the reason the new MINI became so popular is that it dared to be different, with cutesy styling and an interior unlike any other car. The only reason we didn’t include it on this list is because its a victim of its own success, they’re such as common sight now that they don’t stand out .
Let us know what new cars you think have character, wed love to hear your thoughts!
