Infotainment systems have, in recent years, had an increasing influence on which cars we buy. Manufacturers such as Audi, BMW and Mercedes have worked hard to perfect these complicated bits of kit, but more often than not they can’t keep up with the pace of technology.
That’s why Apple developed CarPlay – a system that lets you mirror your Apple smartphone’s display on your car’s internal screen. This makes it quicker (and safer) to use your phone’s features on the move – handy, right?
The technology hasn’t been universally adopted by car makers though, so not every car on sale can be bought with CarPlay. To make things easier for you, we’ve compiled a list of all the cars currently on sale that can be bought with CarPlay, as well as some that are coming in the near future. Often CarPlay is an optional extra, so make sure you scan the options list carefully when ordering your car if you fancy Apple’s latest tech.
Audi has decided to hold back the launch of Apple CarPlay to coincide with the latest generation models — for now only the A4 and Q7 feature it as an option, but expect more models to follow over the course of the year.
BMW hasn’t launched many models that feature CarPlay, instead preferring to wait for its latest generation of iDrive, that features both a touchscreen and gesture controls — this should add an interesting aspect to the way it works.
BMW 7 Series
BMW’s flagship luxury saloon will be its first model to come with CarPlay, but although the 7 Series is already available to order, the Apple system doesn’t yet feature on the options list.
Citroen / DS
Citroen and DS have jumped in at the deep end with CarPlay integration, choosing to feature the system on the majority of its new cars.
Apple fans will be pleased to hear that the Citroen C3 can be bought with CarPlay.
A practical family hatchback with a nice interior, the C4 adds another feather to its bow.
Citroen’s family saloon may not be the brand’s biggest seller, but the C5 is still available with CarPlay.
Citroen Berlingo Multispace
Although the Berlingo Multispace may be based on a van, it still has an impressive infotainment system.
The DS3 supermini is a classy alternative to the likes of the Mini, and is one of only a few premium small cars that feature CarPlay.
The DS5 is a vehicle that doesn’t quite fit into any vehicle category, but buyers of this spacious car will appreciate the improved connectivity.
Ferrari drivers are lucky enough to find Apple CarPlay in most of the brand’s latest models, although they might get distracted by actually driving their cars!
Ferrari California T
The entry-level Ferrari California T is now available with CarPlay – it’s a big improvement over the standard system.
Ferrari’s high performance model now comes with the added benefit of CarPlay.
Ferrari F12 Berlinetta
Similarly to Honda, Hyundai already offer CarPlay on some models in other markets. We think it likely that the technology will make its way here soon, it’s just uncertain when.
Mercedes is another manufacturer that has got on board with Apple’s technology, linking it seamlessly to its COMAND infotainment system. Not all models feature it yet (notably the C-Class and S-Class miss out), but full support won’t be far away.
Mercedes’s smallest model now has the connectivity to match its stylish looks, making the A-Class a winning combination for many young professional buyers.
More practical minded buyers will enjoy the availability of CarPlay in the B-Class.
The CLA is a striking four-door coupe that has plenty of premium appeal but is also affordable to run — the interior might be a little snug but CarPlay is a plus point.
Mercedes’ CLS is one of the most graceful looking cars in its line-up, and the current version now has Mercedes’ unique tablet-style infotainment screen, which gives CarPlay a very Apple-esque feel. Just don’t try to remove the screen from the dash and take it with you…
The new E-Class has a fantastic interior with plenty of luxurious touches. CarPlay simply enhances this and offers increased connectivity for those who have an iPhone.
Mercedes E-Class Coupe/Cabriolet
Mercedes’s smallest SUV was its first to arrive with Apple CarPlay. The GLA offers reasonable practicality, lots of premium appeal and doesn’t cost the earth to buy or run.
Mercedes GLE/GLE Coupe
The Mercedes GLS is due to hit UK roads later this Spring, and will have the option of CarPlay to give it some extra usability.
Mini shares its technology with parent company BMW, so expect them to follow suit in waiting for touchscreen infotainment systems in new models.
The latest version of Porsche’s 911 comes with the option of the CarPlay system, handy for those wanting to keep connected.
The Macan is a popular crossover with massive waiting lists, the addition of CarPlay might make them even longer!
Peugeot doesn’t have as many models featuring CarPlay as sister company Citroen, but expect this to change soon.
A stylish supermini with a unique steering wheel arrangement, the 208 now comes with CarPlay — likely to be a popular option.
Peugeot Partner TeePee
The van-based Peugeot Partner Teepee is quite entertaining to drive, and now has great connectivity, too.
The stylish Ibiza supermini can be bought with CarPlay, that will appeal to the car’s buyers young and old.
If you’re after a well connected and stylish family hatchback, you can’t go far wrong with the Leon – it’s good value as well.
Buyers after a traditional small saloon-lookalike might not necessarily be after this level of iPhone integration, but its nice that they still have the CarPlay option in the Toledo.
SEAT’s value-packed Alhambra seven seater can be bought with CarPlay. That should keep the kids entertained!
Skoda has a surprisingly comprehensive range of models that feature CarPlay – but then again it’s worth remembering that it’s part of the Volkswagen Group, so does get most of the latest tech fairly quickly.
A thoroughly sensible supermini, the Fabia can be had with CarPlay if you’re after an easy way to access your iPhone.
Skoda’s Rapid offers cost-effective motoring with ample space for five and now the option of CarPlay.
If you want a throughly practical and good value family car, you can’t go far with the Octavia – now available with CarPlay.
The Yeti might be nearing replacement, but it’s good to know that you can still buy one that has Apple CarPlay in.
The Skoda Superb has really come on leaps and bounds with the most recent generation car, and CarPlay simply adds to this feeling of quality.
Suzuki SX4 S-Cross
The SX4 is a slightly more sedate crossover than some rivals, but it looks smart, and has the added benefit of CarPlay.
A popular new model, the option of CarPlay is just another great feature of the Vitara.
Vauxhall offers a comprehensive range of models with CarPlay, with the technology featuring on all new generation models.
Vauxhall’s stylish city car can be heavily personalised, and CarPlay will be of great appeal to the Adam’s youthful target market.
The Viva is quite possibly the cheapest car on sale that can be had with CarPlay, great for those on a budget.
Supermini buyers will love the availability of CarPlay in the Corsa, one of the UK’s best selling cars.
The excellent new Astra is one of the best family hatchbacks around, and CarPlay only serves to enhance its appeal.
The Insignia might be getting on in years, but it’s nice that Vauxhall still decided to improve its infotainment system with the addition of CarPlay.
The Polo is a classy supermini that has widespread appeal, the addition of CarPlay simply enhances this.
Although many buyers will be charmed by its retro styling, CarPlay will help endear the Beetle to owners who love their gadgets.
The evergreen Golf is one of the top-selling vehicles in the UK and many buyers who own Apple products are likely to pick the £125 option.
Those after a sportier Volkswagen would do well to check out the Scirocco — with it’s sleek looks and well-built cabin, buyers can now enjoy enhanced connectivity too.
Practical and cheap to run, the Touran offers a great option for a growing family — CarPlay now features on the options list.
The Jetta is very popular in the North American market, so it’s not surprising to find that CarPlay has been added as an option.
The Passat is a sleek alternative to premium badged rivals, with a slick infotainment system and now featuring Apple integration as a useful option.
More a four-door coupe than a fully fledged saloon, the Volkswagen CC is actually based on the previous version of the Passat, but is still available with Apple CarPlay.
There are fewer vehicles on the market that will seat seven passengers more comfortably, and those who choose to buy their Sharan with the option of CarPlay will have a handy way of keeping those passengers quiet.
Volvo is rolling out CarPlay alongside its latest models, so within a couple of years you should be able to buy every new Volvo with the system — it pairs nicely with the large touchscreen.
The Volvo XC90 is one of the best large SUVs around, and CarPlay will look excellent on the large central touchscreen system – it only takes up half the screen too, leaving the rest free for sat-nav and other car controls.
Volvo’s S90 saloon and V90 estate car variant will go on sale late in 2016 and have a similarly impressive touchscreen system to the XC90.
