Everything you need to know about Toyota’s new 10-year warranty

  • Toyota launches new ‘Relax’ warranty
  • Comes with every new Toyota or Lexus model
  • Applies to older cars as well under certain conditions
  • Requires servicing at approved dealers
  • Industry-leading level of cover

Toyota has launched a new warranty scheme called Toyota Relax and it provides cover for up to 10 years – that’s more than any other car manufacturer in the UK.

Previously Toyota offered a five-year warranty on its new cars, but this new scheme doubles the warranty period and is valid so long as you have your car serviced at authorised Toyota dealers.

How does Toyota’s Relax warranty work?

All Toyota and Lexus models now come with a three-year or 60,000-mile warranty when new, but this is extended by one year every time the car is brought into a Toyota or Lexus dealership and serviced by their technicians.

How long does Toyota’s Relax Warranty cover my car?

Toyota’s new Relax warranty is valid for up to 10 years, providing you have your car serviced by certified Toyota or Lexus dealerships. However, the warranty cover is capped at 100,000 miles.

This means higher-mileage cars may not be able to get 10 years of warranty cover, because your car may have covered more than 100,000 miles before it reaches 10 years old.

Which cars are eligible for Toyota’s Relax warranty?

Older cars are eligible for this new warranty scheme, too

All Toyota and Lexus cars, vans and pick-up trucks are eligible. It doesn’t just apply to brand-new models, either – all cars under 10 years old that have covered fewer than 100,000 miles can benefit from the scheme.

If you have an older Toyota, as long as you bring it to a Toyota or Lexus dealer for this next service, it gets a year of warranty cover. This applies if you’ve serviced it outside the network, too. When your extra year of warranty cover is up, just service it at a dealer again to get another year of cover, and so on.

Are hybrids and their batteries covered?

All types of car, from petrol and diesel to hybrids, electric cars and even Toyota’s Mirai hydrogen fuel cell car are able to use the scheme. Hybrid batteries are covered for up to 15 years – with every service at a Toyota dealer, the warranty extends by a year, up to this 15-year mark.

The Toyota Mirai is a bit different – it gets a normal warranty covering 5 years or 60,000 miles for the batteries and fuel cell components.

Does Toyota Relax cover business vehicles, taxis and vans?

Yes, these are also covered by the new warranty – just get them serviced at a Toyota dealer to get one extra year added to the warranty each time. Some vans have a longer service schedule, so get two years added at each service instead.

How much does the Toyota Relax warranty cost?

Toyota says servicing costs haven’t gone up, so it shouldn’t cost any more to get the car serviced at a dealer. Even better, Toyota dealers offer a price promise – they’ll match independent garage servicing prices within 10 miles, so you don’t necessarily need to pay extra to get your car serviced at a dealer.

It could also mean that your Toyota or Lexus is worth more as a second-hand car, since buyers may be pleased to find it now comes with a factory warranty at up to 10 years/100,000 miles.
