This is the new Smart #5, and it’s unlike anything we’ve seen from the brand before.

  • Rugged-looking electric SUV
  • More than 341 miles of range
  • Charges from 10-80% in 15 minutes
  • Won’t go on sale in its current form

Smart has come a long way from the quirky ForTwo micro car of the early 2000s, with the now Chinese-owned brand coming out with some compelling electric SUVs.

This Concept #5 is the latest example. Premiering at the Beijing Auto Show, it’s a slightly left-field alternative to something like a Skoda Enyaq or Hyundai Ioniq 5.

New Smart Concept #5 design

It may be going up against cars like the Enyaq, but the Smart Concept #5 looks more like a rugged off-roader.

The boxy body and knobbly tyres give it an almost Jeep-esque appearance, although it does look much more modern than that car. The square headlamps and dotted LED light bar across the bonnet are features we haven’t seen on a Smart before either.

It looks a bit like a Mercedes EQB from the side thanks to the upright bonnet and flat rear end, although the EQB doesn’t have off-road tyres and these tough-looking alloys. The Concept #5 also has little displays above the wheels showing you the tyre pressures.

The rear lights mimic those found at the front, and you get a whole load of cladding all around the lower edges of the car to protect against damage when you’re tackling off-road trails, or dodging shopping trolleys in your local supermarket car park.

New Smart Concept #5 batteries and range

The new Smart Concept #5 doesn’t use the same 66kWh battery you find in the smaller #3, instead getting a much larger pack of more than 100kWh.

As a result you get more than 341 miles of range. That’s almost 60 miles more than the #3 can manage, and it’s almost exactly the same as range-topping versions of the Skoda Enyaq.

Charging is also super fast thanks to its 800-volt electrical system. You can top up from 10-80% in as little as 15 minutes.

Can a buy a new Smart Concept #5?

Sadly, not in its current form. This is just a concept car for now, however it will inspire a new mid-sized electric SUV in the near future. Expect to see a slightly toned-down version make an appearance in 2025.
