Piano black plastic and soft-touch materials go a long way into making the atmosphere in the Carens more upmarket. However, areas that let the side down are the build quality that is still slightly behind German rivals and the design that is quite dark and gloomy.

If you want the full works you have to go high up the model range for the ‘3’ models that get sat-nav. The system is a touchscreen but it’s fairly responsive and a bit quicker to find a route to your destination than the system in a VW Touran so it’s pretty good even if the graphics are a bit dated.
