2019 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe price and release date
The 2019 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe comes in three different variants: the 840i, 840d and M850i. The 840i starts the range at £69,340 and the all-wheel-drive 840d follows up £73,915. The performance-oriented M850i wraps things up at a chunkier £97,720.
The 8 Series Gran Coupe is available to order now, with the first deliveries due in September.
2019 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe styling
The 2019 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe is the four-door version of the two-door BMW 8 Series flagship sports car. As such, the Gran Coupe’s front end is practically identical to its smaller sibling’s, sporting the same lean headlights and wide ‘kidney’ grille: the classic BMW trademark. Things change as you travel further backwards: the Gran Coupe has a more upright windscreen and rear window, intended to increase front headroom and boot space respectively. Oh yes, and then there’s the minor detail of the Gran Coupe having double the number of doors than the standard 8 Series coupe.
Overall, the Gran Coupe is longer, wider and taller than the 8 Series, too.
2019 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe specs
The 840i trim may be the entry level for the 2019 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe range, but it’s far from being barren on the kit front. It has a leather interior as standard, alongside electrically adjustable heated front seats. It has automatic four-zone climate control and the BMW iDrive infotainment setup, too.
All cars in the Gran Coupe range get adaptive suspension as standard, giving the car a sportier drive by monitoring road conditions and terrain with sensors. Plus, the four-wheel-drive 840d and M850i cars add four-wheel steering on top of that. This will make the Gran Coupe more agile in fast turns and easier to position during tricky manoeuvres like parallel parking.
Every 8 Series Gran Coupe comes with automatic emergency braking as an autonomous safety feature.
2019 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe engines
The 2019 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe has three engines for you to choose from: two petrols and one diesel. The entry-level version of the car – the 840i – is rear-wheel drive and has a six-cylinder petrol engine capable of putting out 340hp. This can take the Gran Coupe from 0-62mph in 5.2 seconds while returning a claimed fuel economy of up to 38.2mpg.
From initial appearances, it seems that the mid-range 840d is going to be the pick of the 8 Series Gran Coupe range. It’s four-wheel-drive, meaning that – while its maximum power output is just 320hp – it can reach 62mph from a standstill in 5.1 seconds, with an impressive fuel economy of up to 45.6mpg.
The range-topping, four-wheel-drive M850i trades economy for pure power. It goes from 0-62mph in only 3.9 seconds and has 530hp to play with. Sadly, BMW claims that it returns just 28.5mpg.
No matter which engine you go for, the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe will have an eight-speed Steptronic gearbox.
2019 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe interior and infotainment
The 2019 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe’s wheelbase (the distance between the front and rear wheels) is 3,023mm – 201mm over the standard BMW 8 Series’. This means that the car will have more generous legroom for its rear passengers. Meanwhile, the steeper angle of the windscreen and rear windows will make for more headroom wherever you’re sat.
BMW calls the Gran Coupe a “4+1-seater”, citing – alongside the two proper front and rear seats – the space for a fifth passenger in the middle of the rear bench, which, it claims, “is suitable for use on short journeys”. So, ideally, the Gran Coupe is best for accommodating anywhere up to four adults.
The 8 Series Gran Coupe uses BMW’s iDrive infotainment system. This rotary dial control system is one of the very best on sale, with responsive controls, crisp graphics and easy-to-use voice responsiveness.
2019 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe options
In typical BMW fashion, the 2019 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe has a gigantic number of optional extras all eager to burn a large hole in your wallet. Some highlights include a panoramic glass sunroof and the BMW Laserlight setup, which produces a high-beam headlight range of around 600m. Active Cruise Control is available, giving the car Stop & Go functionality.
Elsewhere, a carbon fibre roof can be selected if you want to make the Gran Coupe lighter (bearing in mind that, as standard, the car is 70kg heavier than the regular 8 Series). The sportiness continues if you opt for the M Sport Technic package, which provides a number of sleek aesthetic flairs, along with 395mm brake discs.
Inside, you can get the Heat Comfort package, which gives you a heated steering wheel and heated armrests. Parking Assistant Plus is available, giving you a 360-degree view of the car’s surroundings on the infotainment screen. Other handy gadgets can be found in the Driving Assistant Package, which lets the Gran Coupe drive and steer itself on the motorway and in heavy traffic. It can even drive evasively and help get you out of the way if it thinks you’re about to crash.
The Gran Coupe has a 205W, nine-speaker stereo system that can be upgraded to either a 464W Harman/Kardon setup or the ridiculous, 1,400W Bowers & Wilkins.
