2017 VW Arteon price, specs and release date

VW plans to launch an all-new coupe saloon in 2017 to replace its aging CC. Called the Arteon, this slinky four-seater will make its first public appearance at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show in March before going on sale later that same year. Read on for full details…

The new Arteon, left, is expected to draw inspiration from the Sport Coupe GTE Concept, right…

2017 VW Arteon – styling

The single design sketch, shown above, suggests the new Arteon will sport a distinctly sporty silhouette – similar to the Sport Coupe GTE Concept, shown above. A low, sloping roofline, strong door creases and an aggressively raked windscreen should make sure this sporty new four door isn’t mistaken for its more practical Passat sibling. The giant wheels shown in this sketch are unlikely to reach production but its elegant proportions will hopefully make the transition from drawing board to dealership mostly unchanged.

We expect the chrome bars in the Arteon’s grille to extend into its LED headlights in a similar manner to the recently released Tiguan and upcoming Touareg SUVs. VW has also confirmed its new saloon will sport frameless windows and a wide boot opening to make loading bulky items as easy as possible.

The Sport Coupe GTE Concept’s interior hints at what the new Arteon’s cabin will look like…

2017 VW Arteon – interior

No images have been released of the Arteon’s interior, but we expect it to bear almost no resemblance to the outgoing CC’s ageing cabin. Instead, it’s expected to draw inspiration from the Sport Coupe GTE Concept and feature a slick, minimalist centre console with a high-tech infotainment system with gesture control features borrowed from the recently facelifted VW Golf.

The dashboard, door trims and seats should come trimmed with upmarket materials to help this upcoming four door compete with rivals such as the all-new Audi A5.

The Arteon is expected to feature a similar range of engines to the Passat, including an eco-friendly GTE version…

2017 VW Arteon – engines and driving

It may borrow styling cues from a concept car, but the Arteon’s engine lineup is expected to be much more down to earth. The Sport Coupe GTE’s 3.0-litre V6 hybrid will probably be replaced by a selection of petrol and diesel units borrowed from the Passat. A frugal 2.0-litre diesel with 148hp is expected to be the most popular option but we’re keeping our fingers crossed VW will fit the Arteon with a potent 237hp bi-turbo unit and a four-wheel-drive system.

VW could also repurpose the Passat GTE’s 1.4-litre petrol engine and compact electric motor to produce an efficient Arteon hybrid. If this model gets the go-ahead, it’ll be able to travel approximately 30 miles in fully electric mode and will be congestion charge exempt, too.

The concept-inspired Arteon is expected to go on sale in summer 2017…

2017 VW Arteon – price and release date

The Arteon will make its first public appearance at the 2017 Geneva Motor show in March before going on sale the following summer. VW hasn’t confirmed how much it’ll cost but we expect it to carry a slight premium over the outgoing CC. Entry-level cars could cost approximately £26,000 while top-spec GTE versions could set you back close to £40,000.
