The Volvo V40 is a great example of how far the Swedish manufacturer has come in recent times. The V40 is undeniably handsome, safe and very efficient, but has it sacrificed some of Volvo’s legendary practicality along the way?
We’re taking a look at how it measures up in key areas to help you decide if it’s the right car for you. Put the Volvo V40 in our car configurator to see how much carwow could help you save.
Volvo V40 exterior dimensions
The Volvo V40 isn’t short of rivals with the likes of the VW Golf, BMW 1 Series, Audi A3 and Mercedes A-Class all providing stiff competition. It is bigger externally than many of its rivals mainly by virtue of being offered in practical five-door form only.
|Width including door mirrors||2,041mm|
Volvo V40 interior dimensions
While the V40 is fairly big on the outside, commentators say it’s smaller than you’d probably expect on the inside. There’s still plenty of space for a family of four but, if you’re thinking about taking more or larger passengers, you’d be better off in a Ford Focus.
|Shoulder room (front/rear)||1,396mm/1,349mm|
Volvo V40 luggage and fuel tank capacity
The 335-litre boot is hardly class-leading but its even shape means the area available is easy to make the most of. A high loading lip, however, makes it trickier to load heavy objects into the boot than a Volkswagen Golf. You’re unlikely to have to stop for fuel too often thanks to the car’s generous 62-litre fuel tank.
Volvo V40 turning circle
The V40’s turning circle is average for its class. It comes in just under the VW Golf’s 10.9-metre U-turn at 10.8 metres, which could make the difference in the tightest of spaces.
Volvo V40 weight
Because the V40 is at the larger end of the scale in its segment, it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that it’s also reasonably heavy, too. It’s more than 350kg heavier than the lightest Golf, blunting performance and efficiency. The lightest model weighs 1,561kg.
