The V40 is in a competitive class with the VW Golf, Audi A3 and Mercedes A-Class to contend with. On the outside, the car is larger than many of its rivals, partly thanks to only being available in practical five-door form.

The V40 might be big on the outside, but it’s not as spacious as some of its competitors in the inside. The Golf in particular makes better use of its cabin space thanks to being based on a more modern platform. Nevertheless, there’s still enough space for a family of four and a stylish, well-built cabin.

Like the interior, the boot isn’t quite as generous as others in its class. Again, 335 litres is a healthy amount and is more than enough for a trip to the supermarket. The fairly large 62-litre fuel tank means trips to the petrol station will be less frequent than some rivals.
