Drag race: Toyota Hilux vs Volkswagen Amarok

July 08, 2021 by

Normally when it comes to choosing between a Toyota Hilux and a Volkswagen Amarok, it’s all about practicality…

Usually, you’re looking at how much farm equipment each can fit in the back or which is better at towing a digger across a construction site.

Today though, it’s all about pure performance as these pick-ups take to the airfield for an answer to the age-old question — which is fastest?

Though these two workhorses are both fairly punchy, they’re powered by very different engines. The Hilux’s comes with a 2.8-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, producing 204hp and 500Nm of torque.

Under the bonnet of the Amarok is a 3.0-litre diesel V6. It produces 258hp and 580Nm of torque – around 50hp and 80Nm more than the Toyota.

Both trucks have all-wheel-drive systems and both use automatic gearboxes — 6 speeds for the Hilux and 8 for the Amarok.

The Toyota has a weight advantage over the Volkswagen though, coming in at 2.1 tonnes compared to the Amarok’s 2.2 tonnes.

Which of these pick-ups can, err, pick-up the win? You’ll need to watch to find out…
