Mercedes has dropped a new concept car, the AMG PureSpeed, to preview an ultra-rare model which will be available next year.
It’s been inspired by the Mercedes-AMG ONE hypercar, although it’s not yet known what’s hiding under the bonnet.
New Concept Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed design
There’s a lot going on in terms of design with the new Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed, because it looks a bit like someone parked a Formula One car on top of an SL.
It looks as though it started out in life as either an AMG GT or an SL, however the panels have been radically reworked. That front end is heavily inspired by the AMG ONE, with the pointy bonnet and wide air intakes making it look pretty aggressive.
The most notable design cue though is the halo, a crash structure above the driver’s head which looks like it’s been lifted straight from Formula One. It eliminates the need for an A Pillar, which is a good thing because this car has no windscreen.
That halo has been designed to be as aerodynamic as possible, so much so you get two custom helmets with the PureSpeed to make sure your head doesn’t upset the flow of air over the car.
New Concept Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed engine
There’s no word just yet on what’s powering the PureSpeed concept, however a V8 engine is likely to appear under the bonnet.
More specifically, it could use the 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 from the AMG 63 S. That car has 585hp and 800Nm of torque, which would provide plenty of oomph in a car where you’re completely exposed to the elements. Nothing is confirmed yet though, so it could have even more power than this.
New Concept Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed price and release date
This is just a concept car for now, however the AMG PureSpeed does preview a limited-edition model which will be revealed next year. Just 250 of these will be produced, and they’ll only be offered to the most dedicated Mercedes enthusiasts.
Getting your hands on one could prove tricky then, and this exclusivity is almost certain to command a six-figure price tag.
