2019 Mercedes AMG A45 price and release date

With the new A-Class already on sale, the latest version of the stupidly fast Mercedes AMG A45 (likely to be badged A50) is expected to arrive in early 2019 to go up against the Audi RS3 and the BMW M2. You can expect to pay from around £45,000 for the 400hp A45.

A less hardcore model – badged the A35 – with 300hp is also expected before the end of 2018 priced at around £35,000. The A35 will be an alternative to models such as the VW Golf R and the Audi S3.

2019 Mercedes AMG A45 styling

As with the old model, you’ll have no problem spotting the A45 from the standard A-Class thanks to its aggressive ground-hugging bumpers, lowered suspension and swollen arches, housing big wheels. Four enormous exhausts will replace the fake plastic ones on the standard model and it’s also likely to feature the vertical rung (Mercedes calls it ‘Panamerica’) grille design first seen on the AMG GTR supercar.

An aero pack is a likely option that’ll feature various carbon fibre protrusions to aid downforce or – from a more cynical perspective – just make it look cooler.

2019 Mercedes AMG A45 interior

The A45’s interior is sure to impress you – as well as the usual array of AMG extras like figure-hugging sports seats, contrast colour seat belts and carbon trim, the car will also feature the standard A-Class’ stunning brace of infotainment screens complete with augmented sat-nav directions that are currently unique to the model.

The A45’s main selling point is that it combines 400hp with a practical hatchback body. That’ll be even more true in the new model that’ll boast more rear legroom and a bigger boot.

2019 Mercedes AMG A45 engines and driving

The new A45 will feature a heavily re-engineered version of the old car’s turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. Expect power to increase from the current model’s 381hp to more than 400hp, which could see A45’s 0-62mph time drop from 4.2 seconds to less than four seconds – quicker than both the Audi RS3 and BMW M2.

The Mercedes’ lightning-quick seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox will likely get tweaked to handle the extra torque produced by the revised engine, while you can expect the four-wheel-drive system to get a software revisions to offer more or less grip – depending on which driving mode you select.

2018 Mercedes A35

Beating the super-hatch AMG A45 to the dealerships will be its little brother, the A35.

Aimed squarely at the VW Golf R and the Audi S3, the four-wheel drive 300hp Mercedes AMG A35 is likely to cost around £35,000. The A35 will feature a detuned version of the A45’s 2.0-litre engine, which should still be capable of firing the A35 from 0-62mph in under five seconds. Styling is also likely to be toned down – appealing if you have more conservative tastes.
