  • Updated styling
  • New interior trim
  • Flagship Maybach GLS also updated
  • New AMG GLS coming as well
  • On sale later this year

This is the new Mercedes GLS. It’s been given a mid-life update to keep it looking fresh against alternatives like the BMW X7 and Audi Q7.

The flagship Maybach GLS has also been tweaked for 2023, along with the sporty AMG GLS 63.

New Mercedes GLS design

Changes to the exterior of the new Mercedes GLS are subtle, but they do make it look more imposing than before.

The main change up front is a larger and more bold-looking grille with some horizontal slats running across it. You also have larger and re-shaped air intakes in the lower bumper, which are highlighted with some gloss black trim.

The GLS has the same chunky-looking side profile as before. You still get roof bars, as well as stainless steel side steps. New 20-inch alloy wheels are also available. There are some new taillights at the rear, however the bumper looks pretty much the same as the current car’s.

New Mercedes GLS interior

Stepping inside the new Mercedes GLS and you’ll notice that the interior makeover is just as subtle as the exterior’s.

You get a new steering wheel in line with other new cars from Mercedes, and AMG Line models get a chunky flat-bottomed item. The two huge screens will be familiar from the current GLS, however the software has been updated to make it easier to use.

The GLS is still a seven-seater as standard, and you have the option of new beige and brown interior colours. The trim options have been updated as well, with pin-striped piano black now available.

New Mercedes GLS engines and driving

You have four engines to choose from in the new Mercedes GLS, two petrol and two diesel-powered.

Check out this in-depth review of the current Mercedes GLS…

The entry-level petrol engine is a 3.0-litre unit with 381hp and 500Nm of torque. Then there’s a 4.0-litre V8 with 517hp and 730Nm of torque.

As for diesels, they are both 3.0-litre lumps with two different power outputs. The first has 269hp and 650Nm of torque, while the more powerful one has 367hp and 750Nm of torque.

The new GLS remains focussed on comfort, however this is also a surprisingly capable off-roader. The updated version has 30mm more ground clearance and new skid plates underneath.

New Mercedes Maybach GLS

The new Mercedes Maybach GLS has also been given a refresh. It gets some tweaked headlights, a bigger grille and a new bumper to keep it looking modern. You also have the option of some new 23-inch forged wheels, and there are some new paint schemes as well.

It gets similar upgrades to the interior as the standard GLS. Being the more luxurious car, you have two captains chairs in the rear with a big centre console separating the occupants. There’s also the option to have some big screens on the back of the front seats to keep your passengers entertained.

There’s just one engine option for the Maybach GLS. You get a 4.0-litre V8 with 557hp and 730Nm of torque, and it’ll accelerate from 0-60mph in 4.2 seconds. That’s slightly quicker than the current car.

New Mercedes-AMG GLS 63

If you’re after a more sporty flavour in your luxury SUV, the Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 has had a facelift. It gets a similar range of styling tweaks to the standard car.

Up front the grille is slightly different, although it has the same vertical slats as most other AMG cars, and the headlights are new as well. You have a choice of 21, 22 and 23-inch alloy wheels, and the front and rear bumpers have a more aggressive look to them.

Engine-wise, the AMG GLS is the same as before. It has a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 with 612hp and 850Nm of torque. It does have a new mild-hybrid system which improves efficiency, however the 0-60mph time is the same as before at 4.2 seconds.

The AMG GLS gets sports seats and an AMG-specific steering wheel

The adaptive air suspension has been updated to give it a more sporty edge, while also improving day-to-day comfort. You also get active anti-roll control as standard to keep body lean in the corners in check.

How much will the new Mercedes GLS cost?

The new Mercedes GLS will go on sale by the end of the year, however prices haven’t been announced yet. The standard car currently starts from £88,705, so expect the new one to cost over £90,000.

As for the Maybach GLS, that car currently wears a £170,000 price tag, so the new one could get closer to the £200,000 mark. Finally, the current GLS 63 starts from £140,000, so the new one could cost around £150,000.
