This is the new Audi A5 Avant, formerly known as the A4. Audi has shaken up its naming structure, with petrol-engined models now getting odd numbers. Read on for all you need to know about this executive estate car.

  • New Audi A5 Avant spotted testing
  • New name for the A4 Avant
  • Similar styling to the current car
  • Could share interior parts with the Q6 e-tron
  • Expected to retain petrol engines
  • Reveal rumoured to be happening this summer

The Audi A4 Avant is getting replaced this year, and its successor has been spotted testing wearing a very thin disguise. The new Audi A5 Avant is expected to make its debut at some point this summer, and it’ll retain a similar range of petrol and diesel engines as the current car.

New Audi A5 design

Audi doesn’t tend to go in for massive styling overhauls, and it looks as though the new A5 Avant will be no exception. This prototype is wearing next to no camouflage, so you can see most of the design changes over the outgoing car.

The massive Audi grille isn’t going anywhere. In fact, it looks ever more wide and imposing than the current car’s mouth. The headlights are the main change here though, as they appear to be much more rounded than the ones you’ll find on today’s A4 Avant.

It has a very similar silhouette to the current A4 as well, but things do get much more modern at the rear. You can see the swoopy new light bar, and it seems to have more bold contours than the one you’ll find on the new A6 e-tron.

What will the interior look like?

While there are no pictures of the new Audi A5’s cabin just yet, we can look to the new Audi Q6 e-tron to get an idea of what sort of technology will be available.

The new electric SUV will set the benchmark for Audi’s cabins going forward, and it’s dominated by a bank of screens across the dashboard. The person riding shotgun can also get their own 10.9-inch screen.

It’s not been confirmed whether or not all of this tech will feature in the A5, but there’s a good chance that at least the design will be similar.

What engines will be used in the new Audi A5?

The new Audi A5 will be available with a range of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid engines, however you’ll have to wait for the Audi A4 e-tron for an all-electric model.

The high-performance Audi RS5 is set to get a plug-in hybrid makeover for this new generation.

The 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 in today’s RS4 could face the chopping block as part of this electrified upgrade, because it’s likely Audi will seek to fit the forthcoming RS5 with a smaller, possibly four-cylinder, engine paired with a beefy electric motor. After all, that’s exactly the format Mercedes has followed for the upcoming AMG C63…

An all-electric Audi A4 E-Tron is due to arrive after the new A5 as an alternative to cars such as the Tesla Model 3 and BMW i4. You can expect to see a similar design to the standard A5, albeit with a blanked-off front grille.

You’ll be able to get it with either a single or dual-motor layout, the latter offering all-wheel-drive. There may also be an electric RS performance model, however this is some way off.

When will I be able to buy a new Audi A5?

It’s expected the new Audi A5 will go on sale in 2023, so a reveal of the model will be coming soon

Pricing will likely rise over the existing model’s £36,000 asking price.
