The new Audi A5 is coming soon, but not as you know it. This new car has been spotted testing, and you can find out all about it here.

  • New Audi S5 spotted
  • Replacement for the current Audi S4
  • Sleek new design
  • Will use petrol and diesel engines
  • Reveal possible by the end of the year

This is the new Audi A5, and it’s not coming back as the svelt 2-door coupe you know it as today. A re-structure in Audi’s naming policy means that this is a new four-door saloon replacing the A4.

The A4 will return as a pure-electric model, with Audi reserving even numbers for EVs and odd numbers for internal combustion engined cars. This prototype is the sporty S5.

New Audi S5 design

Like we said, the new Audi A5 will be a four-door saloon, and it’ll be available as an Avant estate model. This is the S5, and it gets some sporty additions.

Up front you can see the wide grille you’ve come to expect from Audi models, and being the S5 it has a honeycomb design. The lower bumper is covered over for now, however you can expect to see some large air intakes on the production car.

Down the side, this new car has a slightly more coupe-esque shape than the outgoing Audi A4 thanks to a sporty sloping roofline, however it is still a three-box saloon rather than a hatchback like the current Audi A5 Sportback.

It’s at the rear where you can tell this is the S5 thanks to those quad tailpipes, An RS5 is likely to come along at a later date, with that car getting large oval twin pipes. The rear lights are covered over for now, however you can tell it’ll have a full-width light bar with a similar shape to the Audi Q4 e-tron.

New Audi S5 engines and driving

The new Audi A5 will be available with petrol and plug-in hybrid engines, and a diesel engine may sneak into the lineup as well.

You can expect a variety of 2.0-litre petrol units with power outputs varying from 150hp around 200hp.

This sporty S5 model could use a plug-in hybrid system similar to the one you get in the Audi Q5. In that car you have a 2.0-litre petrol engine paired to an electric motor to make 300hp. This could be tuned for the S5 to boost this figure beyond the 340hp you get in the current Audi S4.

When will the new Audi S5 go on sale?

The new Audi A5 is expected to go on sale by the end of the year, so the standard car should be revealed soon. This sporty S5 should come along a few months later.

The price is likely to rise over the £36,000 starting price of the current A4, with this new model likely to fetch closer to £40,000. The S5 could cost around £55,000.
