The all-new Mercedes-AMG SL55 is finally here, but how does it compare to its grandad? Well were about to find out…

Mat’s behind the wheel of the old SL55 for this drag race. Built in 2004, it has a 5.5-litre supercharged V8 engine which used to put out 490hp and 700Nm of torque. This one is a bit special though, as it has been tuned to 625hp. That much power could get a bit lairy in a car with rear wheel drive, and it has a five-speed automatic gearbox. As for weight, it’s pretty heavy for a car from this era coming in at 1,885kg.

The all-new SL55 is even heavier though, tipping the scales at 1,950kg. Under the bonnet is a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 with 476hp and 700Nm of torque. The biggest difference between these two cars though is he fact that the new one has all-wheel-drive. This could prove useful today as it’s below freezing out on the runway. Power is sent to all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic gearbox.
