Safety features and Euro NCAP ratings might not be top priorities when you’re looking for a new sports car, but family cars are a different matter altogether. Although estate cars are primarily about additional space, safety is definitely a big item on their agenda.
Here we look at the 10 safest estate cars on sale in the UK today and what makes them so safe. Put any of these cars in our car configurator to see how much carwow could help you save.
Toyota Avensis Touring Sports
Few vehicles are rated higher for safety in Euro NCAP’s 2015 testing than the Toyota Avensis Touring Sports. It scores an excellent 93% for adult occupant safety and 85% for child occupant safety. The Avensis Touring Sports estate is also one of the first models in the range to have Toyota’s Safety Sense collision-avoidance kit and active safety technology.

Skoda Superb Estate
The Skoda Superb Estate is another one of those cars that can now boast a full five-star Euro NCAP rating from the organisation’s more stringent 2015 testing regime. It scores highly thanks to numerous safety assistance systems, up to nine airbags, a rigid body, specifically optimised crumple zones and a new chassis that guarantees stability, comfort and agility.

Ford Mondeo Estate
The Ford Mondeo isn’t far behind the Avensis when it comes to safety ratings, but it’s not been through the more rigorous 2015 regime just yet. However, it was tested as recently as 2014 so its five-star rating is still pretty impressive. This all-new Mondeo has considerably more safety equipment than the model it replaced, such as a pedestrian detection system that can identify people and reduce the chances of a collision.

Although there isn’t a separate estate version of the Subaru Outback, it’s hard to see it as anything other than an estate with its styling. The Outback has a five-star Euro NCAP rating, and it comes loaded with tons of clever crash-prevention tech, including the innovative ‘EyeSight’ system that scans ahead using low-definition cameras to recognise potential hazards in the road. Of course, the Outback is also the only model here to have four-wheel drive as standard as well.

Volkswagen Passat Estate
The latest Volkswagen Passat Estate hasn’t been through Euro NCAP crash testing yet, but the Passat has a history of getting five-star ratings so there’s no reason to expect otherwise with this one. This new model has a strong body and some very clever safety features including, on SE models and upwards, adaptive cruise control, PreCrash occupant protection, a driver alert system, city stop emergency braking with pedestrian detection and more.

Mercedes Benz C-Class Estate
The Mercedes C-Class Saloon got exceptional crash test ratings in 2014, so we wouldn’t expect the estate version to perform any differently. The Mercedes comes with seven airbags as standard, along with drowsiness detection, tyre pressure monitoring and traction control. If you’re happy to pay more you can also have an autonomous braking system, lane-keep assist and internet-connect software to call the emergency services to your location if you have an accident.
Peugeot 308 SW
The Peugeot 308 may have last been crash tested in 2013, but it scored extremely highly with 92% for adult occupant safety and a full, five-star overall rating. Although base-model safety is good, only six airbags are standard and more advanced features such as collision alert and city braking are only available as optional extras only on higher-spec models.

Mazda 6 Estate
The Mazda 6 Estate is a desirable family car that also offers a surprisingly fun driving experience. It has a five-star rating for overall safety and scored 92% for adult occupant safety. Levels of standard safety equipment are what you would expect, although once again, features like city stop braking and adaptive cruise can only added as pricey option packs on the top-spec Sport Nav model.

Kia Cee’d Sportswagon
The Kia Cee’d Sportswagon might not be at the cutting-edge when it comes to advanced safety features, but it still has a full, five-star safety rating, which is what matters most. You do get six airbags, ABS, stability control and hill-start assist on all models, but you’ll have to look elsewhere if you want collision-detection and automatic braking systems. Lane-departure warning is available, but it’s only on the top-of-the-range ‘4 Tech’ model.

Land Rover Discovery Sport
Ok, so the Land Rover Discovery Sport is technically an SUV or a crossover depending on your point of view. However, it has estate-like styling, seven seats and as much room as any estate car. More importantly here though, it’s one of the safest vehicles Euro NCAP has tested recently with an overall five-star rating and 93% for adult safety. It also has highly-advanced kit such as a pedestrian airbag and the autonomous emergency braking system.
