The much-adored Toyota GR Yaris takes on its limited-edition GRMN forefather in today’s drag race. Can new beat old? Watch the video to find out to find out.
When Toyota’s Gazoo Racing division (yes, that’s its real name!) came up with the GR Yaris, it unleashed something pretty special upon the world.
Designed as a homologation special for the World Rally Championship racer, Gazoo took the regular Yaris and completely rewrote its DNA.
It revamped the whole rear of the car, stuffed in a new all-wheel-drive system, and shoe-horned a punchy 1.6-litre, three-cylinder turbocharged engine under the bonnet. That means the GR Yaris has 261hp and 360Nm on tap — pretty impressive for a dinky supermini.
This isn’t the first time the engineers at Gazoo Racing have been let loose on a Toyota Yaris though…
Squaring up against the much-loved GR Yaris is the limited-edition Toyota Yaris GRMN. Based on the previous-gen car, Gazoo ripped out the hybrid drivetrain and stuffed in a 1.8-litre supercharged four-cylinder engine — just like the one you’ll find in a Lotus Elise — as well as a load of chassis upgrades too.
The result is 212hp and 250Nm of torque, though that’s all sent to the front wheels rather than all four as in the GR. The GRMN does weigh a touch less than the new car though, tipping the scales at 1,135kg compared with 1,280kg.
Which will win in this age-old battle of new vs old, then? Well, watch on to find out…
