First up is the £97,000 Audi S8. OK, so it looks pretty much the same as the understated A8, but beneath that lengthy body lurks a 4.0-litre twin-turbo petrol V8 engine. It pumps out 571hp and a whopping 800Nm of torque.

This oomph is channelled through an eight-speed torque-converter-style automatic gearbox to Audi’s famed quattro four-wheel-drive system, so it should have plenty of grip. Trouble is, the S8 tips the scales at a portly 2,230kg – so it’s no lightweight.

However, the Bentley Flying Spur makes the Audi look like the ‘after’ picture in a weight-loss advert because it chalks up a belt-busting 2,437kg. After all, £168,000 will buy you an awful lot of leather, metal and wood… Good thing it has more power than the Audi, then – its 6.0-litre twin-turbo W12 engine conjures up 635hp and a mammoth 900Nm of torque.

It also comes with four-wheel drive, but the Bentley’s eight-speed automatic gearbox is a slick-shifting dual-clutch system and, more importantly, has a launch control mode. Well, Bentley won’t tell you is has launch control, but put everything in its sportiest setting, hit the brakes and floor the gas and this Flying Spur is ready for take off.

But which of these massive mile-munchers will take the honours at the drag strip? Watch the video to find out.
