If you’re looking for a fast SUV, you’re pretty spoilt for choice these days. Which of these performance cars on stilts is the king of the strip, though?
Well, that’s what today’s drag race looks to find out — pitching three of the hottest SUVs you can buy today head-to-head.
First up is the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio. Using the same 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 you’ll find in the Giulia, it has 510hp and 600Nm on tap.
Unlike the saloon, though, the Stelvio sends its power to an all-wheel-drive system through its eight-speed automatic gearbox.
Matching those power figures with its 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline-six engine is the BMW X4 Competition. As with the Stelvio, it uses an eight-speed automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive.
Last, but by no means least, is the Porsche Macan Turbo. It uses a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 engine like the Alfa, but the Porsche’s 440hp and 550Nm figures trail the Italian SUV by some margin.
What could work in its favour though is its snappy seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, which could result in faster gear changes than the more traditional torque-convertor units in the other two SUVs. Just like those cars, the Macan comes with all-wheel drive.
The Macan sits in the middle of the weight stakes – coming in at 1,945kg, compared with the 1,830kg Stelvio and the heavier 1,970kg X4 M.
Which will come out on top? Watch to find out…
