Is the new Volkswagen Golf R any faster than the old car? Watch on to find out…
Today, the Mk8 VW Golf R faces its toughest challenge, as it takes on its forefather — the Mk7 Golf R.
On paper at least, it’s taken a big step forward. The new Volkswagen Golf R retains the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine of the old car, albeit with power boosted up to 320hp and 420Nm of torque.
That’s a fair jump over the 300hp and 400Nm of torque of the Mk7. Both cars use a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox with launch control systems, with power sent to all four wheels.
The new Golf R does weigh a fair bit more though, tipping the scales at 1,551kg compared with the old car’s 1,483kg.
Has progress really been made then, or can the old Golf throw up a surprise? Well, watch on to find out…
