It was a tough day at the office (well, the strip) but we just had to see if the McLaren 720S had what it takes to see off a couple of Italian supermodels in the shapes of the Ferrari 488 Pista and the Lamborghini Aventador SV.

Not only is it a battle of England versus Italy, it’s also a contest between turbocharging and natural aspiration, as well as two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive.
The stunning Ferrari 488 Pista has a 3.9-litre twin-turbocharged V8 that produces a significant 720hp and 770Nm of torque, all of which hits the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. So you need only press the right-hand pedal and go. Sort of.
And go you certainly shall, because the Ferrari weighs just 1,390kg, so it launches like a golf ball off the tee.
It’ll need to, because the McLaren 720S has a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 that also develops 720hp and 770Nm, and drives the rear wheels through a seven-speed twin-clutch auto. It’s almost like the engineers in Italy and Woking had one eye on each other.
However, the Macca’s had a few more pies, so weighs 30kg more than the Ferrari. Significant? Could be.
Rocking up with the most outlandish looks is the Lamborghini Aventador SV, but it definitely has plenty of old-school go to match the show. There are no turbos, but it has a 6.5-litre V12 that generates a whole world of noise, as well as 750hp and 690Nm of torque. The Aventador has a seven-speed automatic transmission that drives all four wheels, so it should be blinding off the line, although its 1,570kg could ultimately prove its undoing.
So will the lightweight Ferrari simply flit off into the distance, or will the Lamborghini romp away on a tidal wave of V12 howl? Or can the understated McLaren knock them sideways, like a knuckle duster in a velvet glove?
Tap on the video and all will be revealed. Enjoy.
