The ultimate SUV drag race: Ferrari Purosangue vs rivals

June 08, 2024 by

Ferrari has finally launched an alternative to the Lamborghini Urus. The Purosangue is one of the most highly-anticipated super SUVs of the last decade, and we’ve rounded up all of its main rivals for a good old-fashioned Carwow drag race.

And it’s set to be an epic drag race. Sitting at the start line we have eight SUVs totalling almost £1.5m, 68 cylinders, 14 turbochargers and over 5,200hp.

Today’s drag race features:

  1. Ferrari Purosangue
  2. Lamborghini Urus Performante
  3. Porsche Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid
  4. Aston Martin DBX 707
  5. BMW X6 M Competition
  6. Range Rover Sport SV
  7. Mercedes-AMG G63
  8. Land Rover Defender V8

1) Ferrari Purosangue

Ferrari Purosangue

The Purosangue is packing a 6.5-litre naturally-aspirated V12 under the bonnet, giving it the most cylinders of the eight cars in today’s lineup. It puts out 725hp and 716Nm of torque sent to all four wheels, and this prancing horse tips the scales at 2,033kg. It’ll make a pretty large hole in your wallet as well with a starting price of £313,220.

2) Lamborghini Urus Performante

Lamborghini Urus Performante

Of course we have the Lamborghini Urus Performante sitting next to the Ferrari, it’s the one to beat after all. It has a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine with 666hp and 850Nm of torque going to all four wheels, and it’s a bit heavier than the Ferrari at 2,150kg. It is cheaper than the Purosangue though, starting from £209,000.

3) Porsche Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid

Porsche Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid

Next up we have the Porsche Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid, the only PHEV on the runway. It uses a similar 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 to the Urus, only it’s paired to an electric motor to make a combined 739hp and 950Nm of torque. Like the other cars it has all-wheel drive, and the electrical gubbins does have an impact on weight with the Porsche coming in at almost two and a half tons. You’ll have to part with £164,800 for the Cayenne.

4) Aston Martin DBX 707

Aston Martin DBX 707

This is the new Aston Martin DBX 707, which puts out – as the name suggests – 707hp from an AMG-derived 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8. It also has a whopping 900Nm of torque, and it weighs in at 2,245kg. The price for this British bruiser? £194,500.

5) BMW X6 M Competition

BMW X6 M Competition

Now for BMW’s contribution to the performance SUV sector: the X6 M Competition. This car’s 4.4-litre V8 engine has 625hp and 750Nm of torque, and it has 2,445kg to shift up the runway. The BMW is also one of the cheapest cars here at £131,405, although that’s still enough for a two-bedroom flat in Scarborough.

6) Range Rover Sport SV

Range Rover Sport SV

We couldn’t forget about the Range Rover Sport SV, because it’s packing a 635hp 4.4-litre V8 engine. It’s actually a similar unit to the one found in the BMW, but it is one of the heaviest cars here at 2,560kg, and it commands a price of £171,460.

7) Mercedes-AMG G63

Mercedes-AMG G63

The Mercedes-AMG G63 is an iconic SUV thanks to its cool, brick-like styling. It’s powered by a 585hp 4.0-litre V8 engine, and it’s only a smidge lighter than the Range Rover at 2,550kg. Just over £170,000 gets you behind the wheel of the G63.

8) Land Rover Defender V8

Land Rover Defender V8

Finally then, let’s take a look at the Land Rover Defender V8. The eight-cylinder engine has 525hp, but it also has the most weight to pull. This off-road legend weighs 2,631kg, and it costs £120,000.
