Even in slightly ageing pre-facelift form, the Audi R8 V10 is still a very quick car. This one even more so, because its mid-mounted 5.2-litre V10 motor has been given a “stage 1” tune to give it the same amount of power as an R8 Plus.
So, it has 600hp and 580Nm of torque, sent to all four wheels via a seven-speed, dual-clutch gearbox. It weighs 1650kg, so it’s no flyweight, but it should still be able to launch like the proverbial stabbed rat.
As can its opponent – the Audi RSQ8. Sure, it might weigh in at a scales-busting 2315kg, but we know from previous drag races that it’s no slouch. You can thank a 4.0-litre, twin-turbo V8 engine serving up 600hp and 800Nm of torque for that. Naturally, it has quattro four-wheel-drive, backed up by an eight-speed automatic gearbox to marshal all that power to the road – or runway in this case.
So, is Audi’s latest super SUV faster than one of its older supercars? Can the RSQ8’s torque advantage compensate for its enormous mass? Will the R8’s drag-racing-newbie driver hold it back?
There’s only one way to find out…
