What do you get when you cross a BMW M340i Touring, an Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio and a Mercedes-AMG A45 S? Well, in this case, you get a classic carwow drag-race matchup.

Let’s start with the BMW. It might look like your average Teutonic trailer-tower, but this speedy estate is packing a 3.0-litre straight-six turbocharged engine with 374hp and 500Nm of torque. That stealthy body also cloaks one of the best eight-speed automatic gearboxes around and a grippy four-wheel-drive system with a seriously snappy launch control system.
All-in, the M340i weighs 1,745kg which makes it the middleweight in this bout. Price? Well, it’ll set you back £50,000, which, makes it the cheapest car here.
Squaring up next to the subtle 3 Series is an altogether more in-your-face Alfa. This Stelvio SUV weighs 1,830kg, which makes it the heaviest in this race, and it’s also the most expensive. Parking one of these on your drive will take at least £73,000.
But then it is the range-topping Quadrifoglio version, meaning it comes with a sonorous 510hp 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6, an eight-speed automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive. But, crucially, it doesn’t have launch control.
That said, if you press the brakes hard enough to rein-in its 600Nm of torque while giving it some serious gas, it’ll leap off the line with characteristically Italian enthusiasm and could be capable of upsetting the lower, sleeker BMW in this race.
No fancy footwork will be required to get our third car going – a Mercedes-AMG A45 S. This 421hp yellow peril is the most powerful hot hatch on sale and comes with four-wheel drive and Mercedes’ latest eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox; both of which have helped make it a sure-fire fast-starter in plenty of carwow drag races before…
It beats the BMW for weight and matches it for torque, chalking up 1,635kg and 500Nm respectively, and takes the middle-ground in this race on price. You’ll have to part with a whopping £56,000 to get your hands on one.
And, if this left-field matchup weren’t enough, Mat’s added a couple of curveballs into the mix in the form of his mum, Sally, and girlfriend, Jo, who’ll drive the Alfa and Mercedes respectively. Watch the race to find out what happens.
