Drag race: Audi RS3 v BMW M3

March 09, 2022 by

Can a good all-wheel-drive system make up for a lack of power? Let’s find out as we pitch the new Audi RS3 against Mat’s rear-wheel-drive BMW M3 Competition.

For today’s race Mat will be driving the Audi RS3. It has a 2.5-litre inline-five cylinder engine with a single turbo putting out 400hp and 500Nm of torque. This is put to the ground via a seven-speed automatic gearbox and, more importantly, Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system. The RS3 also has the advantage on weight, coming in at 1,570kg.

The BMW M3 Competition tips the scales at 1,730kg, however it tries to make up for this under the bonnet. Here you’ll find a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged straight-six with 510hp and 650Nm of torque. It has an eight-speed automatic gearbox and rear-wheel-drive only, which may hinder it off the line.

So will the lighter weight and all-wheel-drive of the Audi be enough? Or will the raw power of the BMW prove too much to overcome? You’ll have to watch the video to find out.
