The Audi S4 Avant is the quickest version of the company’s small estate until the RS4 joins the range next year. Rivals include the BMW 340i Touring, Mercedes-AMG C 43 Estate and the Volvo V60 Polestar. There’s also an Audi S4 Saloon that has improved running costs and a slightly lower price, albeit with a smaller boot.
Understated performance is what the S4’s all about, but as a bonus it gets the regular A4’s none-too-shabby interior, with extra zing courtesy of some extra sporty touches. It’s arguably the best in class – impeccably built, intuitive to use and decently roomy.
Now turbocharged (rather than supercharged, as in the old model) the S4’s engine produces 349hp – 21 more than before. A combined fuel economy figure of 37mpg means it is also more frugal.
Four-wheel-drive grip and clever adaptive steering make the S4 hugely fast if not necessarily fun. Being lighter and more aerodynamic than its predecessor it gets from 0-62mph in just 4.9 seconds – the same as the bonkers original Audi RS4.
All S4 Avant models come with LED headlights, unique 18-inch alloy wheels, leather and Alcantara suede upholstery and a sporty flat-bottomed steering wheel.
