If you really like the Rolls-Royce Phantom, but would rather drive it yourself than be chauffeured, then take a look at the Phantom Coupe. It comes with the same beautifully engineered interior, but in a more ‘sporty’ coupe profile.

Don’t be fooled though, this is still a vast car, and is much more at home wafting down the motorway than it is going for a B-road blast.

Like the Phantom Saloon, you have a wide range of leather colours and veneers to choose from. The quality, as you would expect in a car as expensive as this, is remarkable and it feels beautifully engineered.

Ergonomically, all the controls are well laid out and tidy. Most of the car’s features are accessible through the iDrive system, the same system you find in a BMW. iDrive was one aspect of the Phantom Coupe the critics did take issue with however, stating that it felt underdeveloped, and was irritating to use.

Space in the back seats isn’t as good as the Phantom Saloon, however, for a coupe, it is really impressive, with enough space for two adults to get comfortable. The doors are rear-hinged, which makes getting in and out of the back easy. As mentioned earlier though, the Phantom Coupe really is a car that you would want to drive yourself.

Even though Rolls-Royce claims the Coupe provides a much more sporty driving experience than the Saloon, many journalists came to the conclusion that it still feels like a Rolls-Royce ‘should’. Even if you drove over the worst of roads, it would feel like you were driving on a cushion of air. 

The most noticeable difference between the Coupe and the Saloon is the handling. This can be put down to the fact that the rear springs and dampers have been stiffened up, and a thicker anti-roll bar has also been added into the mix. Wider rear tyres, as well as narrower front ones, also contribute to the changes that help to differ the dynamic character of the Coupe from that of the Saloon.

Critics were impressed by the fact that even though the Coupe weighs in at a monstrous 2.7 tonnes, the mass of the car is still perfectly balanced from front to rear. So beyond the initial body roll on entry, the Coupe still manages to progress through corners with incredible poise.

Like the rest of the Phantom range, the Coupe is powered by with a 6.75 V12 which produces 459hp and 531lb ft of torque. With this incredible engine under the bonnet, the Phantom glides from 0-60mph in 5.6 seconds, and will keep going on to a limited top speed of 155mph. Though, to do so would be uncouth.

The downside of having such a large and powerful engine in a car that weighs close to three tonnes is unsurprisingly poor fuel economy – the Phantom Coupe can only manage 18mpg. That being said, the majority of Phantom buyers won’t be concerned by how much the car costs to run.

As with any Rolls-Royce, the Phantom Coupe is aimed at that small group of people who view £300,000 as pocket change. However, the starting price for the Coupe is slightly more expensive than the normal Phantom.

Although there is an incredibly extensive list of features that come as standard on this amazing car, there is still an almost infinite list of options that you can choose to add to your Phantom Coupe. One such feature is the Starlight headlining, which comes highly recommended by road-testers.

There are similarly luxurious coupes out there such as the Bentley Continental GT and the Mercedes CL which cost much less. None of them have the opulence and exclusivity of the Phantom coupe, however.
