Is a used Toyota Aygo a good car?

City cars can be pretty boring, but then there’s the Toyota Aygo injecting some funky styling into the mix. If you want a small car with character, this could be a good place to start.

Up front you get a big X-like grille design and there’s a contrasting roof that looks great when combined with one of the Aygo’s lairy paint colours. That theme continues inside, but we’d recommend dodging lower-spec trims because they can look pretty drab with cheap plastics everywhere.

Front seat passengers will find the Aygo a welcoming and spacious small car, but the same can’t be said for rear seat passengers. Anyone over six foot will really struggle for leg and headroom. The boot isn’t as big as alternatives such as the Volkswagen Up, either.

The Up is also a bit more comfortable than the Aygo, and the Toyota’s three-cylinder petrol has a tendency to drone under acceleration, but the cabin is quiet enough at motorway speeds. That engine is very frugal and nicely nippy when driving around town, which is where the Aygo is in its element.

What to look for when buying a second hand Toyota Aygo

Toyota has a fantastic record for reliability, so any of its models make a pretty safe bet. Owners suggest the Aygo follows this trend, with little in the way of recurring issues.

One thing to note is that some older Aygos are known to leak a little water into the rear footwell when driving in the rain, so just check for any signs of this.

There have also been a few mentions of replacing exhaust parts, so listen out for any signs of a problem on the test drive. This could be rattling or the exhaust sounding much louder than you might expect.

Otherwise owners tend to note that the Aygo is very good on tyres and has very low running costs.
