2015 Vauxhall Adam Grand Slam available to order

The Adam has single-handedly injected some much needed ‘cool’ into Vauxhall’s range of anonymous, middle-management company cars. Critics agreed, however, that the wheezy petrol engines it came with from launch weren’t up to the battle against the peppy turbocharged units found in the Mini hatch and Audi A1.

A newer 1.0-litre turbo joined the Adam range to improve matters but now the Adam truly has an engine to take on the Mini Cooper. The Adam Grand Slam’s 1.4-litre unit is related to the naturally aspirated version but, with the addition of a turbocharger, now makes 50 per cent more power and 70 per cent more torque.

148hp and 162lb ft of torque are delivered to the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox – enough to propel the Grand Slam to 62mph from rest in 8.5 seconds and on to a 124mph top speed. It does this while emitting 139g/km of CO2 and returning 47.8mpg at the pumps. That’s noticeably less efficient than Volkswagen’s Polo BlueGT – though the Grand Slam is a lot cheaper, costing from £16,995.

The chassis has been uprated to handle the extra power – the rear axle and front springs and dampers have all been swapped for heavier-duty units. The Grand Slam also borrows the braking system from the old Corsa VXR so you get huge 308mm ventilated discs at the front and 264mm ones at the back. 18-inch alloys with 225-section tyres ensure you always have the grip you need.

To reflect the extra muscle under the bonnet, Vauxhall has fitted the Adam with more muscular bodywork. The front splitter, side sills, and rear bumper with cutout for the larger exhaust all enhance the sporting look if the car. Ten questionably-named colours are available (A Star is Brown or Buzz Lightgreen, anyone?) along with a ‘Red ‘n’ Roll’ contrast roof unique to the Adam Grand Slam.

Inside, buyers can select an optional red leather package to match the roof. LED ambient lighting can be optioned and comes with eight different colours. Aluminium pedal covers enhance the Adam’s sporty intent along with special floor mats and kick plates.

Grand Slam thank you ma’am
