Vauxhall Astra and Sports Tourer estate sizes and dimensions guide

The latest Vauxhall Astra is a capable hatchback that competes with rivals including the Ford FocusVolkswagen Golf and Peugeot 308. We’re taking a detailed look at how this great all-rounder measures up along with its Sports Tourer estate sibling so you can see if they’re big enough for your needs.

If you’ve decided this is the car for you, our Vauxhall Astra car configurator and Astra Sports Tourer car configurator can help you get your next new car for a great price.

Vauxhall Astra and Sports Tourer exterior dimensions

The latest generation Astra is actually smaller than its predecessor. Overall length and width is broadly comparable to its main Ford and Volkswagen rivals, but the Astra is granted a sportier stance thanks to its lower height. The Sports Tourer estate has grown slightly, however – it’s actually longer than the seven-seater Zafira Tourer.

Vauxhall Astra and Sports Tourer exterior dimensions
Length (Sports Tourer) 4,370mm (4,702mm)
Width including mirrors 2,042 mm
Height (Sports Tourer) 1,485mm (1,510mm)

Despite its more compact exterior, engineers at Vauxhall have managed to make the interior of the new Astra noticeably larger than the previous model. Legroom has been improved by 38mm, and headroom by a similarly impressive figure. This doesn’t make the Astra the most spacious in the class though – buyers looking for more headroom should check out our list of cars with the most spacious cabins.

Legroom front/rear 1,096mm/915mm

Vauxhall Astra and Sports Tourer boot space

Unfortunately the Astra’s luggage space hasn’t been improved and remains 370 litres – larger than the Ford Focus (316 litres) but lagging slightly behind the Volkswagen Golf (380 litres). Access to the hatchback boot is quite poor because there’s a large lip and intrusive light-clusters that make loading large items more difficult. The Sports Tourer has a much larger boot than the hatchback (540 litres) but it, too, is smaller than the Volkswagen Golf Estate (605 litres).

Vauxhall Astra and Sports Tourer fuel tank and turning circle

The fuel tank can store a fairly healthy 48 litres that, in the most economical diesel model, should allow for a theoretical range of 962 miles – you may struggle to achieve this figure in real-world driving, however. Its 11-metre turning circle is better than the Honda Civic but not as manoeuvrable as many rivals.

 Turning circle 11.05 metres

Vauxhall Astra and Sports Tourer weights and towing limits

Vauxhall has strived to lower the Astra’s weight to help improved the ride, handling and fuel economy. The new Astra weighs on average 130kg less than the old model across the range. The towing capacity of petrol models lags behind some rivals but most customers intending to travel with a trailer will chooses the more competitive diesel engine. This has a maximum towing capacity of 1,500kg.
