Audi A6 and Avant sizes and dimensions guide

We’re taking a look at the Audi A6 and A6 Avant estate dimensions. The BMW 5 Series, Jaguar XF and Mercedes E-Class rival is a tempting executive option so we’ve taken a look how it measures up in all the key areas.

Audi A6 and A6 Avant exterior dimensions

The A6’s overall footprint on the road is very similar to the BMW 5 Series – measuring 26mm longer and 14mm wider. Make no mistake, it’s a big car – an extra 206mm in length relative to the more compact A4 means it won’t be the easiest car to squeeze into a parking space.

Avant variants are almost exactly the same size as the saloon, save for a roofline that’s a couple of millimetres taller. Sporty S6 models sit 25mm lower courtesy of a more driver-focussed suspension set up.

Exterior dimensions
Length 4,933mm
Width 1,874mm
Height 1,455mm (Avant 1,461mm)
Wheelbase 2,912mm

Audi A6 and A6 Avant interior dimensions

Regardless of how tall the driver and passengers are, it’ll be rare for anyone left wanting for space inside the A6. Head- and legroom are more than adequate, and a wide cabin allows each occupant to stretch out. It isn’t significantly different from its rivals, but it’s an undoubtedly a nice, spacious place to sit.

Interior dimensions
Headroom (front/rear) 1,046mm/962mm (Avant 985mm)
Shoulder room (front/rear) 1,460mm/1,429mm
Elbow room (front/rear) 1,527mm/1,491mm

Audi A6 and A6 Avant boot space

Like the cabin, the A6’s boot is massive. Whether saloon or estate, in both instances the total volume is a tiny bit larger than the 5 Series – five litres greater in the saloon, 10 litres more for the Avant. Fold the rear seats down in the Avant, and a very handy 1,680 litres presents itself.

Boot space
Seats up (saloon/Avant) 530/565 litres
Seats down (saloon/Avant) 995/1.680 litres

Audi A6 and A6 Avant turning circle and fuel tank

All A6 models are equipped with a generous 73-litre fuel tank, while the thirstier S6 has a larger 75-litre one. That means, should you brim the 65.7mpg-rated 2.0-litre TDI Ultra, it should be able to travel more than 1,050 miles before needing a refill. An 11.9-metre turning circle is almost identical to that of the 5 Series.

Turning circle and fuel tank
Turning circle 11.9 metres
Fuel tank 73 litres (S6 75 litres)

Audi A6 and A6 Avant weight

Thanks to the extensive use of aluminium in the A6’s construction, it’s one of the lightest cars in its class. The entry-level model is 45kg lighter than a basic 5 Series, despite being powered by a heavier diesel engine.

The top-spec S6 Avant weighs 335kg more due to its estate body style, Audi’s quattro four-wheel-drive system and of course the 414hp 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 under the bonnet.

Lightest Heaviest
1,625kg (2.0 TDI Saloon) 1,960kg (S6 Avant)
