The hot-hatch spectrum is incredibly broad. You can choose from cars such as the uber-powerful Mercedes-AMG A45 S, the rally-bred Toyota GR Yaris, the hardcore front-wheel-drive Honda Civic Type R, and everything in between. But which of these three fast family cars is best?
Tap the video to find out:
Lined up here are three of the most coveted hot hatches on the market today — the lightning-quick Mercedes-AMG A45 S, the angry terrier that is the Toyota GR Yaris and the class stalwart, the Honda Civic Type R.
They’ll be put through grueling tests of performance, everyday usability and the all-important fun factor.
Now, on paper, it’s a bit of a mismatch. For example, the A45 blitzes the Japanese pairing with its monstrous 421hp engine and costs the most at an eye-watering £51,195.
Meanwhile, the Toyota GR Yaris was built to go rallying. This means it’s a total riot with its dinky proportions and clever all-wheel-drive system making its claimed 261hp feel like three times that figure. But it’s hopelessly impractical at the same time.
Then there’s the Honda Civic Type R. It’s long been seen as the benchmark for the hot hatch. It’s decently practical and offers a whole lot of fun behind the wheel and comes in much cheaper than the A45, but then it’s more expensive than the Yaris and down on performance compared with the AMG.
So, it may seem a bit of a strange comparison. But, you see, that’s where the true beauty of this test comes into play. The hot hatch formula can be interpreted in so many different ways, but which of these fanboy favourites does the best job of it? You’ll have to watch to find out…
